The mission of the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra is to explore and present the symphonic repertoire, both traditional and modern, for the diverse audiences of the Northern Virginia region while building the musicians and audiences of the future through education and outreach programs.

The Orchestra presents a series of public symphonic concerts during its season to approximately 13,000 patrons. These concerts range from Masterworks to pops and family concerts. Each concert is preceded by a pre-concert lecture educational opportunity for about 800 patrons.
The Orchestra presents educational programs, assemblies, workshops, and concerts in many locations and for all ages throughout the season. It performs in public and private schools, Fairfax County parks, and other corporate and public locations throughout Northern Virginia, serving approximately 35,000 residents and children each season.
The Dorothy Farnham Feuer Memorial String Competition was first held in 1964 as a tribute to Dorothy Farnham Feuer, founder of the Fairfax Symphony and a violinist with the orchestra. This string scholarship competition has provided well-deserved recognition, encouragement, and monetary support to outstanding young performers on string instruments. It is open to advanced string players in grades 7-12 in Northern Virginia. Award money must be used to further the musical training of recipients, and is most often spent toward study with noted teachers, tuition for a summer camp, or the purchase of a new instrument. Many winners have continued to pursue music as private teachers and as members of orchestras throughout the nation, including the FSO.
