Organizations Filed Purposes:
TO ADVANCE AND SUPPORT THE CONSERVATION OF THE UNIQUE BIODIVERSITY AND ECOSYSTEMS OF GALAPAGOS THROUGH DIRECTED RESEARCH, INFORMED PUBLIC POLICY, AND BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY.
TO PROMOTE SCIENCE CONSERVATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION IN THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS.
SCIENCE FOR CONSERVATION - GC CONTINUES TO FOCUS ON EFFORTS TO CONTROL THE DEVASTATING INVASIVE BOT-FLY, PHILORNIS DOWNSI, AND TO ADDRESS THE INCREASING PRESENCE OF PLASTIC DEBRIS ON LAND AND IN THE WATERS SURROUNDING THE ISLANDS. THE EMERGING THREAT OF PLASTICS ENTERING THE ECOSYSTEM OF THE ARCHIPELAGO IS CAUSING INCREASED INSTANCES OF ANIMAL ENTANGLEMENT IN THE PLASTICS AND INGESTION OF PARTICLES. RESEARCH INDICATES THAT PLASTIC WASTE IN THE MARINE RESERVE IS A MEDIUM FOR THE TRANSMISSION OF MICROORGANISMS. IN ADDITION TO SUPPORTING RESEARCH ON THESE ISSUES, GC HAS LAUNCHED VITAL SIGNS, A SATELLITE-BASED MONITORING SYSTEM WITH ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS FOR VARIOUS LAND AND SEA-BASED ZONES ACROSS THE ISLANDS.
EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABILITY - WORKING IN CLOSE PARTNERSHIP WITH ECUADOR'S MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, THE GALAPAGOS GOVERNING COUNCIL, THE SCALESIA FOUNDATION(A GALAPAGO- BASED NGO) GC'S NETWORK OF MORE THAN 40 EDUCATION SPECIALISTS AND ALL 400 LOCAL PREK-12 TEACHERS AND SCHOOL PRINCIPALS ARE TRANSFORMING TEACHING AND LEARNING IN EVERY CLASSROOM IN GALAPAGOS. BY HELPING EDUCATORS TO TEACH CORE SUBJECTS IN THE CONTEXT OF LOCAL EXAMPLES AND SUSTAINABILITY PRINCIPLES, AND TO USE ACTIVE LEARNING APPROACHES SUCH AS PROJECT-BASED LEARNING, WE ARE PREPARING THE ISLAND'S 7,500 PREK-12 STUDENTS TO BECOME ENVIRONMENTALLY-MINDED, CRITICAL -THINKING CONSERVATION STEWARDS.
GIANT TORTOISE RESTORATION INITIATIVE- IN 2019, A SEARCH FOR NATIVE TORTOISES ON FERNANDINA ISLAND FOUND A SINGLE FEMALE TORTOISE LIKELY OVER 100 YEARS OLD. THIS DISCOVERY, AND THE DISCOVERY OF ADDITIONAL TRACKS, SUGGESTED THAT THERE WAS AN ACTIVE POPULATION OF TORTOISES PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT TO BE EXTINCT. ELSEWHERE IN THE ARCHIPELAGO, A CENSUS UNDERTAKEN ON DARWIN VOLCANO ON ISABELA ISLAND REVEALED A HEALTHY AND GROWING POPULATION OF GIANT TORTOISES. NEW ESTIMATES SUGGEST ALMOST 2,000 INDIVIDUALS ON DARWIN VOLCANO, UP SIGNIFICANTLY FROM THE PREVIOUS ESTIMATE OF 400. ANOTHER SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENT IN 2019 WAS THE DECISION TO CLOSE THE ESPANOLA BREEDING PROGRAM AFTER A SUCCESSFUL 40-YEAR TENURE AND RETURN THE ORIGINAL BREEDING COHORT TO THEIR NATIVE ISLAND.
