Organizations Filed Purposes: COLLEGE ACCESS FAIRFAX IS A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION CREATED ON JULY 27, 2004 DEDICATED TO GUIDING FAIFAX COUNTY VIRGINIA PARENTS AND STUDENTS THROUGH THE HIGHER EDUCATION AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE APPLICATION PROCESS. CAF ALSO MAINTAINS A SCHOLARSHIP FUND TO ASSIST PARENTS AND STUDENTS WITH HIGHER EDUCATION.

DEDICATED TO GUIDING PARENTS AND STUDENTS THROUGH THE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE APPLICATION PROCESS.

ASSIST STUDENTS WITH HIGHER EDUCATION BY OFFERING SCHOLARSHIPS. A COMMITTEE COMPRISED OF INDIVIDUALS WORKING IN THE FIELD OF COLLEGE ACCESS, FAIRFAX COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS AND DONORS ARE INVITED TO REVIEW SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS ON A SATURDAY IN MAY. A RUBRIC HAS BEEN CREATED TO SCORE VARIOUS ELEMENTS OF THE APPLICATION. REVIEWERS ARE ASKED NOT TO SCORE ANY APPLICANT WHERE THERE MAY BE A CONFLICT OF INTEREST AND SIGN A STATEMENT ATTESTING TO THAT REQUIREMENT. SCHOLARSHIPS: WE CONTINUED TO AWARD ALL OF THE SCHOLARSHIPS OFFERED LAST YEAR, THIS YEAR WE ADDED THE DARLA ELLIS COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP. WE WILL INCREASE OUR PUBLICITY FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP NEXT YEAR. AND NEXT YEAR, WE WILL ADD THE MARSHALL FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP AND THE LORETTA KHAYAM SCHOLARSHIP. BOTH OF THE NEW SCHOLARSHIPS ARE SCHOOL SPECIFIC. AND CAF CONTINUES TO BE THE FUNDING AGENT FOR THE BAILEY'S LITERACY SCHOLARSHIPS, WHICH AWARDED $200 BOOK SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENTS WHO COMPLETED MENTORING ACTIVITIES AT BAILEY'S ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. THESE SCHOLARSHIPS ARE FUNDED BY CAPITAL ONE AND THE BAILEY'S ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PTA. THIS WILL BE THE LAST YEAR FOR THESE SCHOLARSHIPS. CAF ALSO PROVIDES $250 "BOOK SCHOLARSHIPS," AWARDED AS A DRAWING, AS INCENTIVES FOR STUDENT ATTENDANCE AT WORKSHOPS AND SEMINARS.

EDUCATE AND GUIDE PARENTS AND STUDENTS THROUGH THE FINANCIAL AID PROCESS, INCLUDING COMPLETING FEDERAL FORMS, SEARCHING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS, INTERPRETING STUDENT AID REPORTS AND OTHER SERVICES. SERVICES ARE PROVIDED THROUGH PARENT WORKSHOPS AND BY CAF'S FINANCIAL AID CHAMPIONS AT SELECTED LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS, ALL FREE OF CHARGE. EACH CHAMPION SAW APPROXIMATELY 250 STUDENTS. WORKSHOPS ARE ATTENDED BY OVER 2,500 PARENTS AND STUDENTS. GROUP PRESENTATIONS WERE MADE TO PARENTS AND ONE-ON-ONE ASSISTANCE WAS PROVIDED TO STUDENTS AND PARENTS. FINANCIAL AID CHAMPIONS: WE CONTINUED WITH THREE FINANCIAL AID CHAMPIONS THIS YEAR. AS THE SCHOOLS SHUT DOWN IN MARCH, WE MOVED TO HELPING STUDENTS AND PARENTS REMOTELY, VIA PHONE, EMAIL AND ZOOM. MOST OF OUR IN-PERSON EVENTS OCCURRED PRIOR TO THE SHUT-DOWN AND MOST STUDENTS WERE HELPED PRIOR TO MARCH 1. WE ARE NOW IN WEST POTOMAC, MT. VERNON, JUSTICE, EDISON, HAYFIELD, MOUNTAIN VIEW, LEE, CHANTILLY, SOUTH LAKES, AND HERNDON. CHAMPIONS WORKED IN BOTH THEIR RESPECTIVE SCHOOLS AND AT OUR FAFSA COMPLETION EVENTS. OUTLOOK: WE EXPECT TO RETURN TO FIVE CHAMPIONS FOR 2020-2021."PAYING FOR COLLEGE": COLLEGE ACCESS FAIRFAX MAINTAINED THE "PAYING FOR COLLEGE" PROGRAMS, INCLUDING THE CSS PROFILE, SCHOLARSHIP 101 AND FAFSA LINE BY LINE PROGRAMS. PROGRAMS WERE CONDUCTED AT VARIOUS SCHOOLS, AND INCLUDED EVENTS OPEN TO THE ENTIRE COUNTY AND SCHOOL SPECIFIC QUESTIONS. IN ADDITION, THIS YEAR WE CONTINUED OUR "NEW" PROGRAM OF SPEAKING TO STUDENTS IN BOTH CPP, AVID AND PERSONAL FINANCE CLASSES. OVER 800 STUDENTS ATTENDED OUR STUDENT PRESENTATIONS AND OVER 1,000 PARENTS ATTENDED PRESENTATIONS. OUTLOOK: THESE ARE SIGNATURE PROGRAMS FOR COLLEGE ACCESS FAIRFAX, AND WE ANTICIPATE RUNNING THE PROGRAM AT AS MANY SCHOOLS AS POSSIBLE. "SUPER SATURDAY": THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES AN EARLY OPPORTUNITY FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS TO BEGIN WORK ON COMPLETING THEIR FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA) ONLINE, AND IS NOW CONDUCTED BEGINNING IN OCTOBER OF A STUDENT'S SENIOR YEAR. THE PROGRAM IS CONDUCTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH FCPS CAREER CENTER SPECIALISTS IN EACH SCHOOL THAT DESIRES THE PROGRAM, AND WAS CONDUCTED THIS YEAR AT ANNANDALE, SOUTH LAKES, WEST SPRINGFIELD, MOUNT VERNON, HAYFIELD, JUSTICE, EDISON, MCLEAN, SOUTH COUNTY, WESTFIELD AND LEE. MORE THAN 500 PARENTS AND STUDENTS WERE SERVED THROUGH THIS PROGRAM. OUTLOOK: WE ANTICIPATE CONTINUING THIS PROGRAM AT MULTIPLE SITES NEXT YEAR."MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAMS": THESE PROGRAMS, WHICH NORMALLY OCCUR IN THE SPRING, WERE ALL CANCELLED AS SCHOOLS WERE SHUT DOWN AND WE HAD NO PLACE TO HOST THE EVENTS. WE HOPE TO REINSTATE THE PROGRAMS NEXT YEAR. OTHER ACTIVITIES: COLLEGE ACCESS FAIRFAX DISTRIBUTED MORE THAN 3,000 FINANCIAL AID HANDBOOKS AT THE ANNUAL FCPS COLLEGE FAIR/COLLEGE NIGHT EVENTS AND OTHER EVENTS.
