THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE'S PRIMARY PURPOSE AND ACTIVITY IS SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST.

THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE IS A VIRGINIA NONPROFIT, NONSTOCK CORPORATION ORGANIZED FOR MEDICAL RESEARCH AND SCIENTIFIC PURPOSES WITHIN THE MEANING OF SECTION 501(C)(3) OF THE INTERNAL REVENUE CODE OF 1986, AS AMENDED (THE "CODE"). THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE IS A VISIONARY INITIATIVE OF ITS PRINCIPAL MEMBERS INOVA HEALTH SYSTEM FOUNDATION, UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA AND GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY, ALL PROMINENT TAX-EXEMPT ORGANIZATIONS, AND ALL OF WHICH ARE ORGANIZATIONS DESCRIBED IN SECTION 501(C)(3) OF THE INTERNAL REVENUE CODE AND/OR STATE INSTRUMENTALITIES.THE COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA HAS HELPED TO CATALYZE THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS PUBLIC/PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP THROUGH FUNDING SUPPORT WITH KEY GOALS INCLUDING THE DEVELOPMENT OF CLINICAL SCIENCE APPLICATIONS THAT IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF VIRGINIANS, EXPANSION OF BIO-TECH DEVELOPMENT AND COMMERCIAL ACTIVITY IN VIRGINIA, AND CREATING A COLLABORATIVE PLATFORM THAT FACILITATES THE ABILITY OF VIRGINIA RESEARCH UNIVERSITIES AND COMMERCIAL PARTNERS TO PURSUE IMPACTFUL RESEARCH AND ATTRACT EMINENT RESEARCHERS.THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE'S PRIMARY PURPOSE AND ACTIVITY WILL CONTINUE TO BE THE ACTIVE SUPPORT OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST IN CONJUNCTION WITH INOVA HEALTH CARE SERVICES, A SECTION 501(C)(3) HOSPITAL ORGANIZATION AND THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE'S ACADEMIC INSTITUTION MEMBERS. IN THE LAST YEAR THERE HAVE BEEN CHANGES IN THE EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP OF THE PRINCIPAL MEMBERS. THE NEW LEADERS HAVE REFINED THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE VISION AND GOALS TO ENSURE IMPACTFUL RESULTS CAN BE ACHIEVED IN A MORE NEAR-TERM TIME FRAME. THE PRIMARY CLARIFICATION DICTATES AN EVOLUTION FROM A BASIC SCIENCE APPROACH TO A MORE REFINED TRANSLATIONAL AND CLINICAL RESEARCH ORIENTATION. THE INSTITUTE'S EVOLVED RESEARCH MODEL IS MORE CLEARLY BASED ON POPULATION HEALTH SCIENCES AS ITS UNIFYING FOCUS, WHICH PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR ACADEMIA, HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS, INDUSTRY AND GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES TO WORK TOGETHER TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF OUR COMMUNITIES. THE PRINCIPLE MEMBERS HAVE AGREED THAT THE PRIMARY RESEARCH THEMES THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE WILL PURSUE WILL INCLUDE: CLINICAL RESEARCH INCLUDING CLINICAL TRIALS FOR MEDICATIONS, DEVICES, DIAGNOSTIC PROJECTS AND TREATMENTS; DATA SCIENCE RESEARCH THAT CAN LINK BIOLOGICAL, CLINICAL, RESEARCH, AND PUBLICLY AVAILABLE DATA TO SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF PRECISION METHODS FOR HEALTHCARE; COST EFFECTIVE PROCESSES AND PROMISING TECHNOLOGY INNOVATIONS; MEDICAL ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH THAT CREATES INNOVATION IN TELEHEALTH, PREDICTIVE ALGORITHMS AND MORE; AND IMPLEMENTATION SCIENCES (ORGANIZATIONAL AND SYSTEMS ENGINEERING) TO ACT AS AN ACCELERANT TO MOVE DISCOVERY AND CLINICAL IMPROVEMENT TO BOTH URBAN AND RURAL POPULATIONS. PUBLIC HEALTH RESEARCH CREATES A PLATFORM THAT WILL LEVERAGE THE ASSETS OF THE PARTICIPATING MEMBERS AND CREATES BROADER OPPORTUNITY FOR STATE-WIDE COLLABORATIONS AMONG OTHER VIRGINIA RESEARCH UNIVERSITIES INCLUDING VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY, VIRGINIA TECH, OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY, AND WILLIAM AND MARY. THESE BROADER UNIVERSITY COLLABORATIONS WILL PROVIDE TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS AND POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS AND WILL BETTER ENABLE THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE TO ATTRACT THE BRIGHTEST RESEARCH MINDS.THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE'S RESEARCH RESULTS AND IDEAS WILL BE DISSEMINATED NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY THROUGH PUBLICATIONS, CONFERENCES AND SITE VISITS TO THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE'S FACILITIES ADJACENT TO THE CAMPUS OF INOVA FAIRFAX HOSPITAL.
