Organizations Filed Purposes: THE VIRGINIA HOSPITAL CENTER MEDICAL BRIGADE'S MISSION IS TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF COMMUNITIES IN HONDURAS. FOUNDED IN 1999, TO PROVIDE DISASTER RELIEF IN HONDURAS, THE BRIGADE NOW DIRECTS ITS EFFORTS IN PROVIDING COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND INTERVENTIONS SUCH AS CLEAN WATER, EDUCATION, NUTRITION AND THE TRAINING OF COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS. IT CONTINUES TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF SERVICES CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE IN HONDURAS AND TO COLLABORATE WITH LOCAL PARTNERS.

THE VIRGINIA HOSPITAL CENTER MEDICAL BRIGADE PROVIDES HEALTHCARE AND OTHER HUMANITARIAN RELIEF SERVICES TO THE UNDERSERVED IN HONDURAS.

THE VIRGINIA HOSPITAL CENTER MEDICAL BRIGADE, INC. ORGANIZES AN ANNUAL MEDICAL MISSION TO COMAYAGUA, HONDURAS. SINCE 1999, THE BRIGADE HAS CONTINUED TO EXPAND AND IMPROVE THE EFFICIENCY OF ITS HEALTHCARE SERVICE. VHCMB HAS EVOLVED INTO A YEAR-ROUND OPERATION THAT TRAINS COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS, PROVIDES PUBLIC HEALTH EDUCATION AND CLEAN WATER SYSTEMS IN REMOTE VILLAGES, AND PROVIDES SUPPORT TO TWO LOCAL UNDER-RESOURCED HOSPITALS IN COMAYAGUA, HONDURAS. IN 2019, VHCMB ADMINISTERED SERVICES INCLUDING 166 SURGERIES AT TWO HOSPITALS, SAN BENITO JOSE AND STA. TERESA; REHABILITATION SERVICES AND TRAINING AT THE COMAYAGUA REHABILITATION CENTER; AND VISION EXAMS, PROVIDING 3,000 PAIRS OF EYEGLASSES TO THOUSANDS OF PATIENTS. VHCMB ALSO CONTRIBUTED ONE 40-FT. CONTAINERS OF MEDICAL SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT TO THE AREA. THE BRIGADE'S REMOTE VILLAGE PROJECT PROVIDES A SUSTAINABLE HEALTHCARE MODEL IN ISOLATED AREAS. HONDURAN COMMUNITY LEADERS IN THREE REMOTE AREAS HAVE BEEN CAREFULLY SELECTED AND TRAINED AS COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS TO TREAT THE MOST COMMON MEDICAL CONDITIONS IN THESE AREAS. THESE WORKERS PROVIDE MEDICAL SERVICES IN THEIR VILLAGES WHERE THERE IS NO ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE. THE BRIGADE CONTINUES TO PROVIDE CLINICAL TRAINING AND SUPPLIES TO THE COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS. AS AN OUTGROWTH OF THE REMOTE VILLAGE PROJECT, THE BRIGADE ALSO EMPOWERS COMMUNITY LEADERS TO IMPROVE WATER AND SANITATION CONDITIONS AS A DIRECT CONTRIBUTION TO THE OVERALL HEALTH OF THE COMMUNITY. THE BRIGADE HAS BUILT POTABLE WATER SYSTEMS AND PROVIDES ACCESS TO SAFE DRINKING WATER IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE UNITED NATIONS MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS.
