Traveling Players Ensemble's mission is to enhance self-expression, self-knowledge, self-reliance, problem-solving skills, and an appreciation of challenges and beauty by bringing great theatre into the great outdoors. Our programs are educational, training pre-teens & teens.

Traveling Players hallmark program is a classical theatre summer camp focusing on Shakespeare, Moliere and Commedia dellArte. The camp, in residence at The Madeira School in McLean, VA, served 144 pre-teens and teens and offers a variety of one- to seven-week programs. Our programs reflect the origins of theatre, when troupes of actors roamed the ancient and medieval countryside. Students camp out, rehearse, and perform outdoors, often in historic locations, cultivating stronger, more adaptable, and more capable artists and individuals. Daily transportation to/from camp on TPE buses is included in tuition. We employee professional artists/educators and designers, most with MFAs. Our camper-staff ratio is 1:4. We granted 13 scholarships to 10 campers based on financial need and dedication.

During the school year, Traveling Players taught 284 students in a variety of acting classes for grades 4-12; one-day intensives focusing on skills like stage combat, improvisation, clowning and Commedia dell'Arte; and master classes in Commedia and character mask in schools. Acting and Improvisation, Scene Study, and Monologues & Audition Technique, a class unique to the region that prepares high school students for college and professional auditions, meet once a week for up to 11 weeks. The Shakespeare in Performance and The Play's the Thing performance classes rehearse twice a week for 11 weeks and perform for the local community, including a festival at the Folger Shakespeare Library. Classes, held in donated space, are taught by professional artists/educators. TPE granted 4 scholarships to 3 students based on financial need and dedication.

Traveling Players other program offerings include field trips to professional classical performances; private coaching; the annual Open Mic Night at the Old Firehouse Teen Center in McLean, VA; and our customizable day long programs for scouts. Scouts and other groups who spend the day learning about acting and improv, then building on those skills to design their own characters and create their own scenes. Participants earn the TPE exclusive "Theatre" badge and the "Playing the Past" badge. Programs and participation vary greatly from year to year based on staff availability and interest.
