Organizations Filed Purposes: VHBG'S MISSION IS TO HELP CHILDREN ACROSS VIRGINIA WITH EMOTIONAL AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CONCERNS BY FACILITATING THE HEALING PROCESS USING A TEACHING-FAMILY APPROACH. THE TRAUMA-INFORMED CARE CHILDREN RECEIVE IN OUR GROUP HOMES, INDEPENDENT LIVING APARTMENTS, JOHN G. WOOD SCHOOL, AND THERAPEUTIC RESOURCE CENTER RESTORES HOPE TO THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES WHO THEN FIND THE COURAGE TO THRIVE. OUR PROGRAMS (GROUP CARE SERVICES, INDEPENDENT LIVING ARRANGEMENT (ILA), JOHN G. WOOD (JGW) SCHOOL (SPECIALIZED K-12 EDUCATION), AND THERAPEUTIC RESOURCES) ALL INCORPORATE THE TEACHING OF COPING SKILLS. VHBG'S 30+ ACRE CAMPUS IS NESTLED IN A PARK-LIKE SETTING AND INCLUDES A FELLOWSHIP HALL, DINING HALL, PICNIC SHELTER, AND RECREATIONAL FACILITIES (A GYMNASIUM, PLAYING FIELDS, OUTDOOR SWIMMING POOL, AN INDOOR RECREATION ROOM WITH WEIGHT EQUIPMENT AND GAME TABLES). WHETHER A CHILD LIVES ON CAMPUS OR COMMUTES, VHBG LOOKS AND FEELS LIKE THE SAFE NEIGHBORHOOD ANYONE WOULD WANT TO LIVE IN.

GROUP CARE SERVICESVHBG IS A LEADER IN PROVIDING A COMPREHENSIVE SYSTEM OF CARE FOR SERVING THE NEEDS OF YOUTH AND FAMILIES. CURRENTLY FOUR COMMUNITY-BASED GROUP HOMES, LICENSED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES ARE LOCATED AND BEING OPERATED ON VHBG'S CAMPUS. THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES FAMILY-STYLE LIVING FOR BOYS AND GIRLS AGES 11-17 USING THE EVIDENCE-BASED TEACHING-FAMILY MODEL, EMPHASIZING THE DEVELOPMENT OF POSITIVE SOCIAL AND INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS AND HEALTHY FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS TO SUPPORT LIFELONG SUCCESS.

JOHN G. WOOD SCHOOL-SPECIALIZED EDUCATIONTHE JOHN G. WOOD SCHOOL IS A LICENSED AND ACCREDITED PRIVATE DAY SCHOOL WHICH SERVES BOYS AND GIRLS, GRADES K-12 INCLUDING RESIDENTS OF VHBG AS WELL AS STUDENTS FROM THE SURROUNDING GREATER RICHMOND COMMUNITY. THE SCHOOL IS LOCATED ON THE VHBG CAMPUS AND IS OPERATED BY VHBG. THE SCHOOL WAS FOUNDED TO PROVIDE A SPECIALIZED EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY FOR CHILDREN WHOSE SPECIAL EDUCATION NEEDS CANNOT BE ADEQUATELY MET BY THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS. THE JGW PROGRAM ALLOWS THESE STUDENTS TO DEVELOP THE SKILLS NECESSARY TO ACHIEVE THEIR ACADEMIC GOALS AND ADVANCE AS PRODUCTIVE CONTRIBUTORS TO SOCIETY.

THERAPEUTIC RESOURCESTHE THERAPEUTIC RESOURCES DEPARTMENT PROVIDES COUNSELING AND INDIVIDUAL, FAMILY, AND GROUP OUTPATIENT THERAPY. THESE SERVICES ARE DESIGNED TO HELP FAMILIES ADDRESS NEEDS WITHIN THEIR OWN HOMES TO PREVENT PLACEMENT OUTSIDE THE HOME OR SUCCESSFULLY TRANSITION AND MAINTAIN YOUTH RETURNING BACK HOME TO PERMANENCY.
