FISH RESPONDED TO FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE REQUESTS FOR RENT, UTILITIES, MEDICAL PRESCRIPTIONS, AND OTHER CRITICAL NECESSITIES IN ORDER TO STOP DESTABILIZING EVENTS AND DISTRIBUTED . TO EFFECTIVELY ADDRESS COMMUNITY NEEDS, FISH ACCEPTS REFERRALS FROM SOCIAL WORKERS IN FAIRFAX COUNTY AGENCIES, LOCAL SCHOOLS, HOSPITALS, AND OTHER NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS. SEASONALLY, FISH SUPPORTED HEALTHY NUTRITION THROUGH SNAP (SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM) AT THE HERNDON FARMER'S MARKET AND PROVIDED HUNDREDS OF HOLIDAY FOOD, GIFT BASKETS AND TOYS TO FAMILIES. IN MAY 2020, FISH WAS SELECTED BY FAIRFAX COUNTY TO BE A CONDUIT FOR PART OF THE $2 TRILLION CORONAVIRUS AID, RELIEF, AND ECONOMIC SECURITY (CARES) ACT, A MAJOR NEW FEDERALLY FINANCED PROGRAM TO AID RESIDENTS IN OUR COMMUNITIES WHO FIND THEMSELVES IN FINANCIAL DISTRESS AS A RESULT OF THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC. FISH WAS ADVANCED $1.8 MILLION TO BE USED THROUGH DECEMBER 2020 FOR PANDEMIC CRISIS RELIEF. THROUGH JUNE 30, 2020 FISH DISTRIBUTED $223,930 OF CARES ACT FUNDS FOR APPROXIMATELY 400 INDIVIDUALS.
THE BARGAIN LOFT IS THE FISH THRIFT STORE PROVIDING AFFORDABLE SHOPPING TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. IT COLLECTS AND MARKETS A WIDE VARIETY OF DONATED ITEMS IN GOOD CONDITION. GENTLY USED FURNITURE, LINENS & HOUSEHOLD GOODS, AND OTHER HIGH NEED ITEMS ARE SOLD. STORE NET PROFITS HELP SUPPORT EMERGENCY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS FOR LOCAL RESIDENTS IN SHORT-TERM CRISES.
