Organizations Filed Purposes: Crude Accountability works with communities impacted by oil and gas development in the Caspian and Black Sea regions, ensuring access to environmental and human rights information and access to justice. We work in partnership with local organizations, international institutions, and individuals on environmental and human rights related issues. We conduct research and writing, training, and engage in partnership activities with like-minded individuals and organizations.

Crude Accountability works in Azerbaijan on environmental monitoring and accountability, specifically in the oil and gas sector. We have conducted monitoring programs reviewing the impacts of the development of the Shah Deniz and ACG petroleum fields on the environment and on local communities. We engaged in environmental monitoring on the ground and also via satellite imagery monitoring both on and offshore. We have also monitored the work of international financial institutions supporting these projects, filing complaints with their monitoring offices, and following up with them on these issues.

Crude Accountability is a member of the Prove They Are Alive campaign, which documents enforced disappearances in Turkmenistan and holds accountable the government of the country for this gross human rights violation, which is paid for with revenues from oil and gas development--the main revenue of the country. Crude Accountability works on the international level with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the United Nations, international financial institutions, and other governmental and intergovernmental institutions to inform the international community about this crime. We also research the corrupt and kleptocratic linkages between the government official responsible for enforced disappearances and for brokering the oil and gas deals that finance this violation of human rights.

Crude Accountability monitors investments by Chinese corporations in the oil and gas sector in Central Asia. We study the environmental and human rights impacts of these investments, including on local communities, and elevate these issues on the international level with the United Nations and other international bodies that monitor environmental and human rights. We conduct field work, produced an award-winning film, and hold seminars, workshops, and virtual meetings to inform the public about our research and writing.
