Organizations Filed Purposes: Our society's mission is to promote the field of behavioral ecology and to support its continued growth by producing a scientific journal and holding international conferences in even-numbered years. We also publish a society newsletter.

The goal of our scientific society is to promote the field of behavioral ecology; our most significant activities consist of producing a scientific journal, which is published by Oxford University Press, holding biennial international conferences, and publishing a society newsletter.

Expenses in this category relate to the society's sponsorship of a biennial conference, which we hold in even-numbered years. Our 2020 conference was to be held in Melbourne, Australia, in September. By early March, abstracts for the meeting had been submitted and we had received >250 travel award applications from early-career individuals (Ph.D. students, post-docs); a few weeks later, Australia banned incoming international flights. Given uncertainty about how long COVID restrictions would remain in place, the executive council decided to postpone the conference until 2022. Although many vendors and the convention center allowed our local hosts to carry over deposits and prepayments until the new date, we accumulated a debt of $40,738 for services that were specifically associated with preparations for the 2020 meeting.

Expenses in this category are associated with the society's scientific journal, which brings in most of the society's revenue. To encourage early career researchers to publish their best research in the journal, we offer a $500 award to the first or sole-author of the most exceptional article published in the journal by a predoctoral student or recent Ph.D. In addition to the cash prize, the award winner is also offered reimbursement for registration and travel to the next ISBE meeting. Recipients are selected in a 2-stage process, wherein our editors nominate particular research articles, and the executive council then chooses the award-winner from those nominations.

The society publishes a newsletter twice per year to keep our members informed of upcoming conferences and elections. It also publishes book reviews, society officer reports, annual financial reports, and our meeting minutes.
