Early Detection Service:HCB2 continued to collaborate with Henrico Health Department to offer a FluFIT clinic to the Richmond, VA community. The one-day event offers flu shots to community members while also assessing each attendee's risk of colorectal cancer. There were over 680 attendees and 82 in-home colorectal cancer screening kits were distributed to community members eligible due to their age, symptoms, or family history or a combination of the three. Each year HCB2 funds the purchase of 120 in-home screening kits for the FluFIT clinics and the testing strips for health departments to complete testing. In 2019, HCB2 volunteers also helped with the navigation to ensure the patients returned the completed screening kits which increased the compliance by 50%. HCB2 educates the medical team and attendees about the FIT in-home screening tool and the importance of early detection. Additional resources are distributed to attendees to help provide information about colon health and colorectal cancer prevention. In 2019 HCB2 increased their colorectal cancer screening program offered to the area free clinics. Colon Health Education: HCB2's free colon health education continued and expanded in the year 2019. Twenty-one Healing Belly baskets were delivered to survivors. The personal delivery includes information about each basket item which helps heal the body, boost the immune system, and generally provide support for overall health and wellbeing. The basket contains a variety of nutrient-dense food items provided at no-cost to survivors. After completing cancer treatment, patients are often left with very little information about how to regain their health through nutrition. HCB2 offerd a group workshop to explain the role of nutrition in boosting the immune system and healing the gut microbiome. Each attendee was given a Healing Belly Basket. HCB2's "anti-inflammtory" grocery list is included in the Healing Belly Baskets; moreover, it is distributed at all community presentations and appearances, and it can be downloaded on the HCB2.org website. There is an increasing interest in gut health, and understanding the gut microbiome's role in preventing disease is becoming more mainstream.
