Organizations Filed Purposes:
THE HIGHLAND SUPPORT PROJECT ORGANIZES NETWORKS OF SUPPORT TO ASSIST HIGHLAND NATIVE COMMUNITIES OF THE AMERICAS BREAK CYCLES OF DEPENDENCY. THESE ORGANIZATIONS ARE INCORPORATED UNDER THE LAWS OF THE RESPECTIVE NATION STATES AS NON-PROFIT, COOPERATIVE OR MUNICIPAL ASSOCIATIONS DEDICATED TO CHARITABLE PURPOSES.
THE HIGHLAND SUPPORT PROJECT (THE ORGANIZATION) PROVIDES FINANCIAL AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS IN ORDER TO EMPOWER COMMUNITIES THROUGH A PROCESS OF ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION. THESE ORGANIZATIONS ARE INCORPORATED UNDER GUATEMALAN LAW AS NON-PROFIT OR COOPERATIVE ASSOCIATIONS DEDICATED TO CHARITABLE PURPOSES.
HIGHLAND PARTNERS FACILITATED 75 VOLUNTEERS FROM UNIVERSITY AND CHURCH GROUPS WHO WORKED IN NATIVE COMMUNITIES IN GUATEMALA AND THE WHITE MOUNTAIN APACHE RESERVATION IN ARIZONA. THESE TRANSFORMATIONAL EXPERIENCES PROVIDED AN ESTIMATED 1,500 HOURS OF VOLUNTEER SERVICES IN COMMUNITY LED INFRASTRUCTURE AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS. A COMMUNITY LED INFRASTRUCTURE PROGRAM CONSTRUCTED 229 STOVES THAT ELIMINATE INTERNAL AIR POLLUTION, A MAJOR HEALTH ISSUE FOR DEVELOPING WORLD WOMEN AND CHILDREN. THE PROGRAM ALSO BUILT ONE COMPUTER LAB, TWO KITCHENS, AND A CISTERN FOR WATER COLLECTION IN ONE COMMUNITY IN GUATEMELA. OTHER BUILDING PROJECTS INCLUDED A GREEN HOUSE, PUMP HOUSE, AND IRRIGATION SYSTEM FOR AN ORGANIC PRODUCE FARM ON THE WHITE MOUNTAIN APACHE RESERVATION. THE PROGRAM WORKS TO ORGANIZE COMMUNITY SOCIAL NETWORKS AND PROVIDE CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOPS THAT ENABLE COMMUNITIES TO SOLVE THEIR OWN PROBLEMS AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OPPORTUNITIES.
ASSOCIATION OF HIGHLAND WOMEN - PROVIDED SUPPORT FOR THE FORMATION OF A REGIONAL WOMEN'S ORGANIZATION TO PROVIDE LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AND RESOURCES TO MAYA WWOMEN AND NETWORK THESE LEADERS. THE PROGRAM PROVIDED 10 DIABETES WORKSHOPS ATTENDED BY 302 WOMEN, TWO MEDICINAL PLANT WORKSHOPS WITH 15 PARTICIPANTS, 10 NUTRITION AND COOKING CLASSES ATTENDED BY 150 WOMEN. ADDITIONALLY, SPONSORED A TWO YEAR MIDWIFERY PROGRAM TO IMPROVE PRENATAL AND EARLY CHILDHOOD HEALTH.
HSP SPONSORED A YOUTH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM FOR TRIBAL YOUTH ON THE WHITE MOUNTAIN APACHE RESERVATION. THE PROGRAM PROVIDED LIFESKILLS AND JOB COUNSELING THAT IS CULTURALLY RELEVANT. THE PROGRAM SUPPORTED FOUR PAID INTERNSHIPS FOR TRIBAL MEMBERS TO DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT GOAL SETTING AND ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM.
