TO CONNECT PEOPLE TO NATURE BY DELIVERING EDUCATIONAL CLASSES, PROGRAMS, EXHIBITS, EVENTS AND DEMONSTRATIONS. 100 STAFF MEMBERS AND 500 ANNUAL VOLUNTEERS ENGAGE LEARNERS OF ALL AGES ON A 23 ACRE CAMPUS SETTING. INDOOR AND OUTDOOR LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDE AQUARIUMS, NATURE PRESERVE, NATIVE ANIMAL HABITATS, GARDENS, OBSERVATORY, PLANETARIUM, AND BOTH FORMAL AND INFORMAL CLASSROOMS.
CONNECTING PEOPLE TO NATURE THROUGH EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES THAT PROMOTE CONSERVATION.
THE MUSEUM DELIVERS OVER 1,300 ANNUAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS LEAD BY MUSEUM PROFESSIONAL EDUCATORS AND CURATORS. A VOLUNTEER CORPS OF APPROXIMATELY 500 COMMUNITY MEMBERS PROVIDE THE EQUIVALENT TO 21 FULL TIME EMPLOYEES. THE PROGRAM IS RANKED #3 NATIONALLY BY THE ASSOCIATION OF ZOOS AND AQUARIUMS (AZA.) THE MUSEUM IS ONE OF FOURTEEN MUSEUMS IN THE US DUALLY ACCREDITED BY AZA AND THE AMERICAN ALLIANCE OF MUSEUMS (AAM.) MORE THAN 270,000 ANNUAL VISITORS AND OVER 8,000 MEMBER HOUSEHOLDS SUPPORT THE MUSEUM. OVER 35,000 STUDENTS ARE EDUCATED UTILIZING VIRGINIA STATE STANDARDS OF LEARNING CORRELATED INTERDISCIPLINARY PROGRAMS IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, MATH (STEM) AND HISTORY. QUALITY EDUCATIONAL EXHIBITS ALLOW EVERY VISITOR A HANDS-ON LEARNING EXPERIENCE ABOUT VIRGINIA'S ECOSYSTEMS. TEN ENDANGERED SPECIES ARE EXHIBITED AND OVER 21 FIELD CONSERVATION PROJECTS CONNECT STUDENTS, VISITORS, STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS TO LOCAL ACTIVE CONSERVATION PROJECTS. A LICENSED VETERINARIAN OVERSEES THE HIGH STANDARD OF CARE FOR MORE THAN 250 SPECIES. MANY ANIMALS HAVE BEEN INJURED AND REHABILITATED AND ARE NON-RELEASABLE.
