Organizations Filed Purposes:
To help people of faith communities develop local solutions to the climate crisis and provide education to local governments about climate change and its consequences.
Outreach - Expanded presence in Northern Virginia in order to reach a broader and more diverse segment of the faith community, including addition of hubs in the City of Alexandria, Arlington, Prince William County in addition to Fairfax County. Partnered to bring the Climate in the Pulpits program to Virginia, in which over 60 congregations across the state hosted sermons, events or activities related to climate justice, reaching over 4,000 people. Participated in actions jointly with community partners, such as stream clean-ups, invasive plant removal, and recycling of single use plastics. Co-hosted programs and events with community partners, including Plastic Free Fairfax and Forum, movie screenings, and growing local food on faith community properties. Hosted third annual FACS Sustainability Champion Awards and Showcase event.
Education - Educating faith communities about the effects of climate change and how it disproportionately affects people of color, lower-income populations, and generally those that contribute to climate change the least. Over 300 people attended the fifth annual FACS Climate Crisis Forum in 2020 to discuss Reducing the Energy Burden. Hosting of webinars on topics such as FACS Tree of Life Eco-Actions program, Advocacy training, food waste, and more. Conducted energy justice workshops to train the faith community about energy justice issues and also how to perform simple, affordable energy upgrades in their homes in order to improve energy efficiency. Supported faith community green teams through capacity-building and knowledge-sharing.
Advocacy - Convened advocacy teams in the local jurisdictions with a FACS hub and led by volunteers which meet monthly by webinar and are tasked with organizing meetings with their local elected officials twice annually. Build capacity of advocacy teams through training and development of talking points and other materials. Organize calls to action including petitions, public testimony, letters to the editor, participation in climate marches and rallies, etc. Build momentum and coalitions in support of FACS Fairfax to Zero campaign to move Fairfax County to net zero emissions by 2050 if not sooner and sister campaigns in neighboring jurisdictions.
