The mission of CHSVA is to build strong permanent families and lifelong relationships for Virginia's at risk children and youth.
My Path Forward (formerly The Possibilities Project) provides housing and holistic supportive services to youth who have experienced life traumas and aged out of foster care without a family. Supportive services are provided in six major areas: 1) post-secondary education and vocational training; 2) employment and career development skills; 3) financial management; 4) health and mental healthcare; 5) establishment of permanent relationships with supportive adult mentors; and 6) safe, stable housing. Youth housing is provided through a partnership with Better Housing Coalition. My Path Forward's highly collaborative service model uses best practice, trauma informed and equitable approaches that equip aged out youth to thrive as independent, successful adults.
CHS's Foster Care Adoption Program recruits, trains and supports families to adopt older children who are waiting to be adopted out of the foster care system. We serve children who are in the custody of social services because they have been abused, neglected and/or abandoned. Our team uses best practice, trauma-informed approaches as we collaborate with local social service agencies and private therapists to meet the needs of the waiting foster children who are often considered "tougher to place". We also provide a lifetime of support services to their adoptive families.
The Post Adoption Program provides parent coaching, family support services, and respite care to children and their families after their adoptions have been finalized. Post Adoption services ensure our client's adoptions continue and are successful by 1) helping adopted children learn to feel safe and function as part of a healthy family; and 2) equipping adoptive parents to meet the special needs of children who have experienced significant abuse, neglect and/or abandonment by their biological families. In addition to ensuring adoptions are successful, we provide support services to support adult adoptees, including helping them learn about and sometimes connect with their birth families.
