Organizations Filed Purposes:
THE MAYMONT FOUNDATION IS COMMITTED TO CREATING EXPERIENCES THAT DELIGHT, EDUCATE AND INSPIRE.
THE ROBINS NATURE CENTER AND MAYMONT FARM/WILDLIFE HABITATS: THESE FACILITIES/COMPONENTS EDUCATE VISITORS ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE THAT ARE NATIVE TO VIRGINIA, SERVING OVER 500,000 GUESTS AND STUDENTS. STAFF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATORS MAINTAIN CURRICULA BASED ON THE STANDARDS OF LEARNING FOR SCIENCE AND SOCIAL SCIENCE IN VIRGINIA. THEY PROVIDED INSTRUCTION TO OVER 13,000 STUDENTS FROM SCHOOL DISTRICTS ACROSS VIRGINIA. STAFF ZOOLOGISTS AND AQUARISTS MANAGED 400 ANIMALS (85 SPECIES). THE WILDLIFE THAT RESIDE AT MAYMONT HAVE BEEN RESCUED AND REHOMED AFTER BEING INJURED OR ABANDONED IN THE WILD, AND REHABILITATED BY PROFESSIONALS. STAFF CONDUCTED ANIMAL WELFARE AND TRAINING PRESENTATIONS. THESE FACILITIES/COMPONENTS ARE ALSO USED TO SUPPORT PUBLIC PROGRAMMING, SUMMER CAMPS, CAMP-OUTS AND SCOUT PROGRAMS. THE ROBINS NATURE CENTER CLOSED FOR RENOVATION IN NOVEMBER. TO COMPLY WITH COVID-19 PUBLIC HEALTH RESTRICTIONS, THE FACILITY REMAINED CLOSED UNTIL JULY 2020. PUBLIC PROGRAMS, SCHOOL PROGRAMS, AND SUMMER CAMPS WERE CANCELED BEGINNING IN MID-MARCH DUE TO THE PANDEMIC.
HISTORICAL GROUNDS, PARKLANDS AND FORMAL GARDENS:MAYMONT GROUNDS CONSIST OF APPROX. 100 ACRES OF FORMAL GARDENS, A HOUSE MUSEUM, OUTBUILDINGS AND AN ARBORETUM AND SERVED OVER 500,000 GUESTS. THE DIRECTOR OF PARK OPERATIONS AND HORTICULTURE HOSTED AN ONGOING HORTICULTURE EDUCATION SERIES BROADCASTED ON LOCAL PUBLIC TELEVISION REACHING APPROX. 18,000 HOUSEHOLDS. OTHER GARDEN PROGRAMS, ATTENDED BY THOUSANDS OF GUESTS, INCLUDED THE BUMBLE BEE JAMBOREE, WREATH-MAKING WORKSHOPS, PRUNING CLASSES, GARDEN AND ARBORETUM WALKING TOURS, VEGETABLE GARDEN PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN AND MASTER GARDENER TRAINING CLASSES. THE HOUSE MUSEUM WAS OPEN SIX DAYS A WEEK FOR DOCENT-LED TOURS, AS WELL AS SELF-GUIDED TOURS IN THE LOWER LEVEL AND AT THE CARRIAGE HOUSE FEATURING A 22-VEHICLE ANTIQUE CARRIAGE COLLECTION. HISTORICAL TOURS WERE PROVIDED TO OVER 26,000 GUESTS. THE PROGRAM/EDUCATORS MAINTAIN CURRICULA BASED ON THE STANDARDS OF LEARNING FOR HISTORY IN VIRGINIA. THEY PROVIDED INSTRUCTION TO 11 SCHOOL DISTRICTS ACROSS VIRGINIA. MAYMONT REMAINED OPEN AND ADMISSION-FREE TO SERVE GUESTS THROUGHOUT THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. HOWEVER, FOLLOWING COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS, HISTORICAL TOURS AND PROGRAMS WERE DISCONTINUED FROM MID-MARCH THROUGH THE END OF THE FISCAL YEAR.
OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES: ENSURING CONSISTENT PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT AND ENRICHMENT ON THE EXPANSIVE GROUNDS AT MAYMONT WAS A PRIMARY FOCUS OF PROGRAMMING IN FISCAL 2020. APPROXIMATELY 11,000 GUESTS EXPERIENCED MUSIC AND CULTURAL EVENTS AT MAYMONT. GUESTS ALSO ENJOYED SEVERAL EVENTS ON THE ESTATE GROUNDS INCLUDING JAZZ FESTIVAL (15,000) AND AUTUMN GARDEN GLOW LIGHT FESTIVAL IN THE JAPANESE GARDEN WITH OVER 14,000 GUESTS. TO COMPLY WITH COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS, SPRING EVENTS SUCH AS FAMILY EASTER AND HERBS GALORE WERE CANCELLED. VOLUNTEERS ARE A FUNDAMENTAL PART OF MAYMONT'S MISSION TO ENGAGE AND INTEGRATE WITH THE COMMUNITY. WHILE MOST VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES WERE DISCONTINUED BEGINNING IN MID-MARCH DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, 1,036 VOLUNTEERS CONTRIBUTED MORE THAN 11,711 HOURS, THE EQUIVALENT OF 6 FULL TIME EMPLOYEES.
