THE READ CENTER ACCOMPLISHES THIS MISSION BY PROVIDING CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION AND ONE-TO-ONE TUTORING TO ADULTS OVER THE AGE OF 18 WHO WANT TO IMPROVE THEIR READING, WRITING, BASIC MATH AND DIGITAL SKILLS.
TO HELP ADULTS WITH LOW LEVEL READING SKILLS DEVELOP BASIC READING SKILLS THROUGH CLASS INSTRUCTION AND ONE-ON-ONE TUTORING.
THE ABILITY TO READ, WRITE, DO BASIC MATH, AND USE A COMPUTER IMPACTS A PERSON'S HEALTH, EMPLOYMENT, FINANCIAL STABILITY, HOUSING, AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT. THE READ CENTER OFFERS LIFE-CHANGING OPPORTUNITIES TO ADULTS SEEKING TO IMPROVE THEIR LIVES BY IMPROVING THEIR LITERACY. READ PROVIDES SMALL CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION AND 1:1 TUTORING FOR ADULT LEARNERS WHO NEED TO IMPROVE THEIR LITERACY SKILLS. READ BUILDS INSTRUCTION AROUND STUDENT'S PERSONAL LITERACY AND LIFE GOALS BECAUSE LEARNING IS MOST SUCCESSFUL WHEN THE CONTENT IS MEANINGFUL, INSPIRING, AND RELEVANT. READ PROVIDES TRAINING AND ONGOING SUPPORT FOR VOLUNTEER TUTORS WHO WORK WITH STUDENTS 1:1 AND IN CLASSROOMS. READ CONNECTS WITH LIKE-MINDED ORGANIZATIONS TO BETTER SERVE STUDENTS.
IN THE 2019-2020 ACADEMIC YEAR, READ SERVED 149 STUDENTS THROUGH CLASSES AND ONE-TO-ONE TUTORING. STUDENTS ACHIEVED 138 PERSONAL GOALS INCLUDING IMPROVED READING AND DIGITAL SKILLS, INCREASED INVOLVEMENT IN THEIR CHILDREN'S EDUCATION, OBTAINING A DRIVER'S LICENSE, EMPLOYMENT, US CITIZENSHIP AND MORE. ONLY ONE SEMESTER OF DATA WAS COLLECTED DUE TO THE PANDEMIC. 127 TUTORS GAVE 5, 328 OF TIME AND CARING TO SUPPORT READ CENTER STUDENTS. READ HAD AN 87% VOLUNTEER TUTOR RETENTION RATE AND A 93% STUDENT RETENTION RATE. 96% OF STUDENTS LIKE THEIR CLASSES.
IN MARCH 2020, THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC HIT. READ QUICKLY AND CREATIVELY PIVOTED TO DISTANCE LEARNING TO CONTINUE INSTRUCTION. STUDENTS AND TUTORS MOSTLY MET BY PHONE ALTHOUGH ONE CLASS WAS ABLE TO MEET ONLINE. 75% OF READ STUDENTS COMPLETED THE SPRING AND SUMMER SEMESTERS
