THE SACRED HEART CENTER (SHC) CONNECTS LATINO FAMILIES WITH TOOLS TO THRIVE AND FLOURISH. SHC'S WORK MANIFESTS THROUGH: A CONTINUUM OF EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR ADULTS; INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH AND CHILDREN; AND STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS TO MEET COMMUNITY NEEDS.
THE SACRED HEART CENTER CONNECTS LATINO FAMILIES WITH TOOLS TO THRIVE AND FLOURISH.
ADULT LITERACY: SEVEN DIRECT PROGRAMS WERE ADMINISTERED AND OFFERED TO ADULTS. CLASSES WERE OFFERED IN ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE, GED PREPARATION IN SPANISH, CITIZENSHIP, BASIC LITERACY, LATINO LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE, CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH, AND PARENTING. IN FY20, 618 ADULTS WERE ENROLLED IN CLASSES AND RECEIVED ALMOST 14,000 HOURS OF INSTRUCTION. IN ADDITION, SHC HAD 10 GED GRADUATES THIS YEAR, 5 INDIVIDUALS THAT PASSED THEIR CITIZENSHIP EXAM AND BECAME U.S. CITIZENS, AND 12 INDIVIDUALS THAT GRADUATED FROM THE LATINO LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE AND ACQUIRED CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND.
FAMILY RESOURCE PROGRAMMING: SHC OFFERED SEVEN PROGRAMS TO CHILDREN AND YOUTH IN FY20. THE FAMILY LITERACY PROGRAM INCLUDED A SCHOOL READINESS PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN 18 MONTHS TO 4 YEARS OLD WHILE ADULTS LEARN ENGLISH OR BASIC LITERACY SKILLS AS WELL AS A SCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM USING THE SAME MODEL FOR SHC'S EVENING CLASSES, FOR CHILDREN FROM 4 TO 12 YEARS OLD. IN ADDITION, SHC HAD PROGRAMS FOR HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH, INCLUDING A COLLEGE AND CAREER BOUND PROGRAM, WHICH ENCOURAGES LATINO YOUTH TO FINISH HIGH SCHOOL AND PREPARES THEM FOR POST-SECONDARY OPTIONS, AND FAMIGOS (FORMERLY EXCELL) , A PROGRAM FOR YOUTH THAT HAVE RECENTLY ARRIVED IN THE US WHICH PROVIDES SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL SUPPORT. ALSO OFFERED IS CASA LAPIZ, AN ART PROGRAM FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS. THE TOTAL NUMBER OF CHILDREN AND YOUTH SERVED BY THESE PROGRAMS IN FY20 WAS 355.
COMMUNITY HUB AND MEETING BASIC NEEDS: THE FAMILY PROTECTION PROJECT WHICH IS DIRECTLY ADMINISTERED BY SHC, PROVIDED IMMIGRATION LEGAL SERVICES TO FAMILIES AND SERVED OVER 542 FAMILIES IN FY20. IN ADDITION, MANY OTHER PARTNERSHIPS ALLOWED FOR A VARIETY OF SERVICES TO BE PROVIDED AT SHC'S LOCATION. FOOD ASSISTANCE WAS PROVIDED DAILY THROUGH A PARTNERSHIP WITH BAINBRIDGE MINISTRIES AND CARE-A-VAN PROVIDED BY BON SECOURS OFFERED A BILINGUAL MEDICAL CLINIC TWICE A MONTH THAT SERVED THE UNINSURED AND ENCOURAGED WELLNESS. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH METROCASH, SHC PROVIDED BILINGUAL TAX PREPARATION SERVICES FOR CLOSE TO 73 FAMILIES. SEVERAL INTERNATIONAL CONSULATES ALSO PROVIDED SERVICES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. BILINGUAL COUNSELING WAS PROVIDED THROUGH COMMONWEALTH CATHOLIC CHARITIES AND SAFE HARBOR. MEDICAID NAVIGATION WAS PROVIDED THROUGH THE VIRGINIA HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION. DURING THE PANDEMIC, SHC PROVIDED EMERGENCY RESPONSE CRISIS SERVICES, INCLUDING FOOD AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO FAMILIES FOR HOUSING. THESE PARTNERSHIPS RESULTED IN 18,746 PEOPLE BEING SERVED IN FY20.
