The organization works to address and end violence with a specific focus on lesbian, gay bisexual, transgender, and queer communities in Virginia
The organization works to provide a world free from all forms of bigotry and violence against such groups as homophobia, bi-phobia, trans-phobia and heterosexism racism. Other areas focused by the organization include: classism, sexism, xenohobia, antisemitism, ableism, ageism, hate voulence, intimate partner violence, sexual violence, state-sanctioned violence, bullying and harassment.
Counseling Services - provides assistance and support to victims of violence and bigotry. The Virginia Anti-Violence Project provides accessible, meaningful, and culturally-specific services to LGBTQ+ identified Virginians that have been the victims of violence committed in the context of hate/bias motivated violence, inmate partner/sexual/dang violence, state-sanctioned violence, and/or stalking. VAVP provides crisis intervention, individual and group support services, accompaniment to hospitals for medical examinations, hotline counseling, emergency services intended to restore a survivors' (continued on Schedule C)
Education and Training - works with other community service organizations to provide education and training to support affected clients and their families. LGBTQ+ survivors of violence often request support in navigating financial stability, housing, and accommodations in the workplace and school. VAVP supports community members to organize and fill out paperwork for self-advocacy, accompanies community members to meetings, provides resources and referrals to support navigating those systems, and makes space for one-on-one coaching so that community members have a supportive place to practice self-advocacy (continued on Schedule C)
Outreach - develops marketing, community meetings and other efforts to communicate with the general public on issues that affect the organization's target clientele. Emergency housing for LGBTQ+ individuals that have been impacted by violence is an urgent need, all across Virginia. Unfortunately, mainstream shelters do not feel like safe options for queer/trans individuals that have been traumatized by violence, and many shelters have restrictions that bar many LGBTQ+ survivors from entry, such as definitions of violence that exclude LGBTQ+ specific experiences of family violence and rejection.
