Organizations Filed Purposes:
THE VIRGINIA FOUNDATION FOR COMMUNITY COLLEGE EDUCATION (VFCCE) MISSION IS BUILDING STUDENT SUCCESS AND THE COMMONWEALTH'S FUTURE BY SUPPORTING VIRGINIA'S COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS. VFCCE PROVIDES STATEWIDE LEADERSHIP IN PROVIDING NEEDED RESOURCES TO HELP ALL COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS ACHIEVE COLLEGE SUCCESSS, SUPPLEMENTING THE ACTIVITIES OF THE 23 COLLEGES AND SECURING SUPPORT FOR SYSTEM-WIDE INITIATIVES THAT COULD NOT BE UNDERTAKEN BY ANY SINGLE COLLEGE.
TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO EDUCATION & ENSURE SUCCESS FOR ALL STUDENTS, REGARDLESS OF BACKGROUND.
SINCE 2006, THE FOUNDATION HAS SUPPORTED HUNDREDS OF STUDENTS ACROSS VIRGINIA'S 23 COMMUNITY COLLEGES THROUGH ITS SCHOLARSHIPS AND FELLOWSHIPS PROGRAM. THANKS TO OUR GENEROUS PARTNERS, THE VFCCE HAS AWARDED MORE THAN $4 MILLION IN SCHOLARSHIPS, HELPING STUDENTS INCREASE THEIR CHANCES OF SUCCESS. FOR THE 2019-2020 ACADEMIC YEAR, 174 SCHOLARSHIPS WERE AWARDED TOTALING $704,225. THE PRESTIGIOUS FELLOWS SCHOLARSHIPS AWARD HIGH ACHIEVING SECOND YEAR STUDENTS' FULL SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT TO COMPLETE ASSOCIATE DEGREES AND DEVELOP LEADERSHIP SKILLS THROUGH A COHORT MODEL. SINCE ITS LAUNCH IN 2011, 181 STUDENTS HAVE RECEIVED MENTORING AND LEADERSHIP TRAINING THROUGH THE FELLOWS PROGRAM.
THE GREAT EXPECTATIONS (GE) PROGRAM IMPROVES THE LIKELIHOOD OF COLLEGE SUCCESS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE WITH FOSTER CARE EXPERIENCE BY PROVIDING SUPPORT NEEDED TO ACCESS AND SUCCEED IN COLLEGE THUS TRANSITIONING SUCCESSFULLY TO INDEPENDENCE. GREAT EXPECTATIONS PROVIDES CAMPUS COACHES, MENTORSHIP AND CONNECTION TO RESOURCES, AND IS A CRITICAL LINK IN HELPING AT-RISK YOUTH ACHIEVE COLLEGE AND LIFE SUCCESS. SINCE INCEPTION IN 2008, OVER 9,000 YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE RECEIVED COACHING SERVICES AND OVER 600 CREDENTIALS HAVE BEEN EARNED. IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2019-2020, 1,446 STUDENTS WERE SERVED. MOST SIGNIFICANT, IS THAT GREAT EXPECTATIONS STUDENTS ACHIEVE A GRADUATION RATE OF 23 PERCENT ALMOST TRIPLING THE NATIONAL COLLEGE GRADUATION RATE FOR FOSTER YOUTH. THE VFCCE PROVIDES GREAT EXPECTATIONS FUNDING TO STUDENTS AT 21 OF VIRGINIA'S COMMUNITY COLLEGES.
THE RURAL VIRGINIA HORSESHOE INITIATIVE (RVHI) HAS BEEN RENAMED TO THE GERALD L. BALILES RURAL VIRGINIA HORSESHOE INITIATIVE AWARD WITH A MISSION TO RAISE EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT LEVELS FOR RESIDENTS IN RURAL VIRGINIA. PLACING FULL-TIME CAREER COACHES IN RURAL HIGH SCHOOLS TO ASSIST LOWER- AND MIDDLE-INCOME FAMILIES IN NAVIGATING HIGHER EDUCATION OPTIONS AND PROVIDING FINANCIAL INCENTIVES, HAS LED TO INCREASES IN BOTH THE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION RATE AND THE COLLEGE ATTAINMENT LEVELS SINCE RVHI LAUNCHED IN 2014. CURRENTLY, THIRTEEN OF THE FOURTEEN RURAL COMMUNITY COLLEGES PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM. IN THE FIRST FIVE YEARS OF THE PROJECT, MORE RURAL RESIDENTS HAVE EARNED HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMAS AND HAVE BECOM COLLEGE GRADUATES. MORE THAN 26,000 STUDENTS WORKED WITH COACHES TO DEVELOP CAREER PLANS AND ENROLL IN COLLEGE. SINCE THE PROGRAM BEGAN, EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENTS LEVELS HAVE RISEN IN RURAL VIRGINIA - BOTH HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE ATTAINMENT RATES HAVE INCREASED FOUR PERCENTAGE POINTS RESPECTIVELY. IN ADDITION, OVER 650 STUDENTS IN RURAL VIRGINIA HAVE RECEIVED FINANCIAL INCENTIVES TO ASSIST WITH TUITION, FEES, BOOKS, SUPPORTIVE SERVICES, AND OTHER COSTS NOT COVERED BY TRADITIONAL FINANCIAL AID, SUCH AS TECHNOLOGY, TRANSPORTATION, AND CHILDCARE. THE FOUNDATION PROVIDES MATCH FUNDING THAT IS LEVERAGED BY LOCAL COLLEGE FOUNDATIONS TO SUPPORT THE PROGRAM.
