The purpose of ECHO is to help people in need in our community by assisting those who suffer the effect of long-term poverty as well as people who are experiencing an emergency need. ECHO provides financial assistance, food, clothing, household items, school supplies and holiday assistance.
ECHO assisted 1,496 unduplicated households (5,330 individuals) in FY 2020. When the Covid-19 pandemic began in March, 2020, ECHO experienced a sharp increase in clients needing assistance and focused its efforts on financial assistance, food pantry and children's clothes. During the fiscal year 570 households received financial assistance to pay bills for housing, utilities, prescriptions, and other essential needs. 35 households received assistance during June as funds from the CARES Act became available through a cooperative agreement with Fairfax County. Clients received 233,456 pounds of food plus $35,480 in an expanded program of coupons for fresh produce, meat and milk; 3,474 bags of clothing; and household items valued at $103,915. In addition, 1,279 children received backpacks filled with school supplies valued at $57,555. 491 families received holiday food, and 639 children from 256 families were assisted at our holiday gift shop.
