Organizations Filed Purposes: The Josh Anderson Foundation's (JAF's) mission is to provide adolescents with mental health education, resources and support so they will never turn to suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among those aged 15-24. In an effort to prevent suicide among adolescents, the Josh Anderson Foundation provides tools for teens to change their school culture around mental health to be one that encourages help-seeking behavior, social connectedness and the development of healthy habits and coping skills, all of which are protective factors to suicide prevention.

Provide adolescents with mental health education, resources & support so they never turn to suicide.

JAF's principal program is "Our Minds Matter" (OMM), first developed in 2016 to further the scope of mental health promotion and deepen its impact on student's mental wellness. OMM is a student-led club model which equips students with the resources and tools to change their school culture around mental health. The primary component of this program is a user-friendly website (www.ourmindsmatter.org) which makes accessible to high school staff and students all resources and program activities necessary to make a positive impact on their school culture's mental health. OMM activities focus on increasing help-seeking behavior, promoting social connectedness and encouraging the development and use of healthy habits and coping skills among students. In the fiscal year ended June 30, 2019, JAF has implemented the OMM program in 45 schools nationwide, with the majority in the Metro DC area. Results from the 2018-2019 school year evaluation with student respondents in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPA) in Fairfax County, VA, who had participated in the OMM program showed that 78% of student respondents perceived an improvement in their own coping skills, 93% of student respondents reported a perceived sense of enhanced belonging, 87% of student respondents perceived improvement in their own resource knowledge and more confidence in using the resources and 95% of student respondents reported improved prosocial actions to benefit peer mental health.
