EXHIBITIONS - MOCA PROVIDES THE COMMUNITY THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE CURRENT ART IN PAINTING, SCULPTURE, PHOTOGRAPHY, GLASS, VIDEO, AND OTHER VISUAL MEDIA. THE MUSEUM TYPICALLY OFFERS 4-5 MAJOR EXHIBITS ANNUALLY AND SHOWCASES 14-18 AUXILIARY EXHIBITIONS THAT PRIMARILY FEATURE REGIONAL ARTISTS. REGULARLY CHANGING EXHIBITIONS FEATURE WORKS BY INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED MASTERS AND SHOWCASE THE TALENT OF LOCAL AND STATE ARTISTS. AS THE ONLY MUSEUM IN THE COMMONWEALTH DEVOTED ENTIRELY TO CONTEMPORARY VISUAL ARTS, MOCA ATTRACTS MORE THAN 45,000 VISITORS ANNUALLY.
EDUCATION - MOCA'S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN, YOUTH, AND FAMILIES TO EXPLORE THE WORLD OF CONTEMPORARY ART AND ENGAGE IN ACTIVITIES RELATED TO THE EXHIBITIONS. PROGRAMS INCLUDE SCHOOL VISITS, MANY OF WHICH COMBINE A TOUR WITH AN ART-MAKING EXPERIENCE; A TEEN APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM; AND FAMILY FESTS THAT ARE OFFERED AT NO CHARGE SO THAT FAMILIES OF ANY INCOME LEVEL CAN ENJOY HANDS-ON ART ACTIVITIES, SCAVENGER HUNTS, AND THEMED ENTERTAINMENT, INSPIRED BY CURRENT EXHIBITIONS. THE MUSEUM'S STUDIO SCHOOL PROVIDES COURSES DEVOTED SPECIFICALLY TO HANDS-ON ART-MAKING-DRAWING, PAINTING, CERAMICS, DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY, MIXED MEDIA, AND MORE. APPROXIMATELY 20,000 PARTICIPANTS ARE ENGAGED THROUGH EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS EACH YEAR.
BOARDWALK ART SHOW - THE ANNUAL BOARDWALK ART SHOW PRESENTS AN ECLECTIC RANGE OF FINE ARTS AND CRAFTS ALONG 15 BLOCKS OF THE VIRGINIA BEACH OCEANFRONT. THE EVENT FEATURES THE WORK OF NEARLY 300 ARTISTS FROM ACROSS THE REGION AND THE COUNTRY AND SHOWCASES ALL TYPES OF FINE ART AND DIVERSITY OF MEDIA: CERAMICS, DIGITAL ART, GLASS, JEWELRY, METALWORKS, PHOTOGRAPHY, AND MORE. OVER 3-DAYS THE BOARDWALK ART SHOW DRAWS AN AVERAGE ATTENDANCE OF 250,000.
