THE CLIFTON INSTITUTE EXISTS TO PROTECT AND ENHANCE BIODIVERSITY FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF KNOWLEDGE, PROMOTING THE POSITIVE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE ENVIRONMENT AND HEALTH. WE AIM TO INSPIRE THE NEXT GENERATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDS, TO LEARN ABOUT THE ECOLOGY OF THE NORTHERN VIRGINIA PIEDMONT, AND TO CONSERVE NATIVE BIODIVERSITY. WE ACCOMPLISH THIS BY PROVIDING ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION TO PEOPLE OF ALL AGES, CONDUCTING ECOLOGICAL RESEARCH, AND RESTORING HABITAT FOR NATIVE PLANTS AND ANIMALS. OUR 890-ACRE FIELD STATION, WHICH INCLUDES FORESTS, GRASSLANDS, SHRUB FIELDS, AND WETLANDS, PROVIDES A BEAUTIFUL AND EASILY ACCESSIBLE LOCATION FOR OUR PROGRAMS AND IS PERMANENTLY PROTECTED UNDER CONSERVATION EASEMENT.
EDUCATION. WE PROVIDE ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION TO PEOPLE OF ALL AGES. OUR PROGRAMS, WHICH INCLUDE FIELD TRIPS, NATURAL HISTORY LECTURES, AND GUIDED TOURS, FOSTER SCIENTIFIC PROFICIENCY AND CRITICAL THINKING. THEY ALSO PROMOTE A SENSE OF CURIOSITY AND WONDER IN NATURE. DURING 2019, 1,587 CHILDREN ATTENDED 41 PROGRAMS, AND 603 ADULTS ATTENDED 52 PUBLIC PROGRAMS. WE ALSO HOSTED 9 HIGH SCHOOL INTERNS AND 12 COLLEGE INTERNS WHO LEARNED WHAT IT'S LIKE TO WORK AT AN ENVIRONMENTAL FIELD STATION AND CONTRIBUTED TO RESEARCH PROJECTS.
RESTORATION. OUR FIELD STATION COVERS A MOSAIC OF DIFFERENT HABITAT TYPES, INCLUDING FOREST, GRASSLANDS, SHRUBLANDS, WETLAND, VERNAL POOLS, STREAMS, AND PONDS, EACH OF WHICH IS HOME TO A DIFFERENT COMMUNITY OF PLANTS AND ANIMALS. WE MANAGE 300 ACRES OF EARLY SUCCESSIONAL HABITATS (GRASSLANDS AND SHRUBLANDS) TO BENEFIT NATIVE SPECIES AND TO CONTROL NON-NATIVES. IN 2019 WE STARTED A MAJOR GRASSLAND RESTORATION EXPERIMENT TO RESTORE 110 ACRES OF A FORMER CATTLE PASTURE THAT IS DOMINATED BY FESCUE TO A NATIVE GRASSLAND TO BENEFIT NATIVE SPECIES.
RESEARCH. WE DO SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH TO LEARN ABOUT THE ECOLOGY OF THE NORTHERN VIRGINIA PIEDMONT, TO TEACH FUTURE GENERATIONS OF SCIENTISTS, AND TO GUIDE LAND MANAGEMENT. IN 2019, WE STUDIED THE CONDITION OF OUR PASTURE BEFORE WE STARTED THE RESTORATION EXPERIMENT. WE GAVE THREE MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO ENGAGE IN HANDS-ON SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH DURING OUR FIRST EVER YOUNG SCIENTIST RESEARCH EXPERIENCE. WE MONITORED VERNAL POOLS FROM NORTHERN VIRGINIA TO THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY TO STUDY HOW URBANIZATION AFFECTS MOLE SALAMANDER BREEDING BEHAVIOR AND SUCCESS.
