Organizations Filed Purposes: Community organization serving as a catalyst for community engagement, research and solutions. Reports are prepared and distributed through the local media and forums held to discuss the findings.

Explanatory journalism. Experienced journalists work for Foothills Forum as independent contractors researching and reporting on key county issues. In 2020, the journalists produced, for approximately 3,000 print and online news consumers, these articles: "Life in the New Normal," a series on the enormous, unforeseen reality of COVID and its impact on education, businesses, government, religion, public safety, and daily life, including these articles: "Anatomy of a Pandemic," a story that employed the Freedom of Information Act to detail that half of Rappahannock's COVID cases and both deaths were traceable to a single church revival, a multi-page reporting package on "Back to School in the New Normal," and o a series of "Life Interrupted" profiles on local citizens and their how they are coping. "Home Sweet Home?" a two-part, graphics-intensive series, including a public survey, that was result of a year-long look at local housing and the challenges of affording to live in Rappahannock. "Protecting Paradise," a four-part set of articles on the beloved natural environment of Rappahannock, including land use and conservation, rivers and soil, and climate change.

Media partnerships. Foothills Forums makes payments to a media partner, the weekly Rappahannock News, to cover back-end costs required to publish our explanatory journalism, including award-winning data graphics, photography, page layout, and newsprint costs. (Over four consecutive years, Foothills Forum and the News have won jointly a total of 15 awards from the Virginia Press Association, including First Place and Best in Show for in-depth/investigative journalism and data visualization graphics.)

Community outreach: Foothills Forum engages in a variety of public activities to extend the reach of our journalism and to build the capacity of our community to report and produce news, including public fora and activities in the county public schools.
