Organizations Filed Purposes:
Common Threads connects kids to healthy food in the garden, in the kitchen, and at the table. We want kids to grow up making food choices that are good for their bodies, their communities, and the environment.
Emergency food distribution - Collaborated with school districts and food banks to grow, glean, process, and distribute healthy food to hungry families. This included not only supporting the distribution of several thousand emergency food boxes every week (the exact numbers varied throughout the pandemic) but also partnering with the Bellingham Food Bank, Bellingham Public Schools and Whatcom Community Foundation on a Farm to Freezer project. This project purchased produce from BIPOC owned farms, many of whose markets dried up during COVID, turned that produce into hearty soups, stews, and sauces, and then froze that product for distribution to hungry community members throughout the year.
School based food education - supported close to 9000 students in learning about healthy food through gardening, cooking, and eating healthy food. Virtual education - engaged kids in cooking and gardening via zoom cooking classes and other virtual content during Covid 19 pandemic.
