OUR SELF-HELP PARENTING PLAN CLINIC FOR SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE FILLS AN IMPORTANT GAP IN OUR COMMUNITY BY PROVIDING INTENSIVE, INDIVIDUALIZED LEGAL GUIDANCE TO SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE WHO WILL REPRESENT THEMSELVES IN COURT. OUR CLINIC ATTORNEY, SUPPORTED BY VOLUNTEERS, ASSISTS WITH DRAFTING PARENTING PLANS AND RELATED DOCUMENTS THAT PROVIDE APPROPRIATE LEGAL PROTECTIONS FOR OUR CLIENTS AND THEIR CHILDREN. THE SELF-HELP NATURE OF THE CLINIC ALLOWS US TO NAVIGATE A DIFFICULT LEGAL SYSTEM AND OBTAIN POSITIVE RESULTS.
OUR HOMELESS DISABILITY BENEFITS ADVOCACY PROJECT SEEKS TO END HOMELESSNESS BY ASSISTING HOMELESS DISABLED INDIVIDUALS TO OBTAIN THE STATE AND FEDERAL DISABILITY BENEFITS TO WHICH THEY ARE ENTITLED. THESE BENEFITS PROVIDE AN INCOME STREAM AND MEDICAL INSURANCE TO THE RECIPIENTS, ENABLING THEM TO SECURE HOUSING AND STABILIZING MEDICAL TREATMENT. OUR ADVOCATE CONDUCTS WEEKLY OUTREACH TO THE HOMELESS IN OUR COMMUNITY AT SHELTERS AND OTHER KEY LOCATIONS AND PROVIDES ASSISTANCE PREPARING INITIAL APPLICATIONS FOR BENEFITS. WHERE INITIAL CLAIMS ARE REJECTED, CLIENTS RECEIVE ASSISTANCE REQUESTING RECONSIDERATION OF THE DECISION, INCLUDING OBTAINING ADDITIONAL MEDICAL EVIDENCE AND DOCUMENTATION.
OUR STREET LAW PROGRAM HAS OPERATED FOR NEARLY 25 YEARS AND PROVIDES FREE, IN-PERSON LEGAL ADVICE TO HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE PER YEAR. STREET LAW IS A TWICE-A-MONTH DROP-IN CLINIC CONDUCTED AT THE BELLINGHAM PUBLIC LIBRARY ON SATURDAY AFTERNOONS. THREE VOLUNTEER ATTORNEYS PROVIDE ADVICE AND ASSISTANCE IN NUMEROUS AREAS OF LAW TO ANYONE WHO ATTENDS. WHERE POSSIBLE, LAWYERS ANSWER LEGAL QUESTIONS ON THE SPOT, AND THEY CAN DRAFT OR HELP DRAFT SIMPLE CORRESPONDENCE AND DOCUMENTS. WHERE MORE EXTENSIVE ASSISTANCE IS REQUIRED, A LAWYER CAN TAKE ON FULL REPRESENTATION PRO BONO OR REFER THE CLIENT EITHER TO OTHER LAW ADVOCATES PROGRAMS OR TO ONE OF SEVERAL OTHER SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS WITH WHICH WE COLLABORATE.
