Organizations Filed Purposes: COMMUNITY BASED NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION STRIVES TO RECOVER SALMON BY ENGAGING OUR COMMUNITY IN RESTORATION, EDUCATION, AND STEWARDSHIP.

NSEA IS A COMMUNITY BASED NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO RESTORING SUSTAINABLE WILD SALMON RUNS IN WHATCOM COUNTY. BELIEF: WE BELIEVE THAT SALMON ARE AN ESSENTIAL PART OF OUR ENVIRONMENT, CULTURE AND ECONOMY. VISION: WE ENVISION ABUNDANT SALMON, HEALTHY STREAMS, AND A SUPPORTIVE, ENGAGED COMMUNITY. MISSION: WE STRIVE TO RECOVER SALMON BY ENGAGING OUR COMMUNITY IN RESTORATION, EDUCATION AND STEWARDSHIP.

HABITAT RESTORATION: NSEA'S SALMON FOCUSED HABITAT RESTORATION PROJECTS HAVE A STRONG FOUNDATION IN SCIENTIFIC METHODOLOGY AND ARE PLANNED AND IMPLEMENTED WITH MANY COOPERATIVE PUBLIC, PRIVATE, TRIBAL, AND BUSINESS PARTNERS. PROJECT STAFF LED 19 NEW RESTORATION PROJECTS IN 2019 INCLUDING IN-STREAM WORK, LARGE WOODY DEBRIS (LWD) PLACEMENT, FISH PASSAGE BARRIER REMOVAL, AND LIVESTOCK EXCLUSION. IN 2019, NSEA STAFF AND CREW MEMBERS PLANTED 14,755 FEET OF STREAMBANK WITH 13,406 NATIVE TREES AND SHRUBS AND INSTALLED 40 LWD STRUCTURES. 19 INSTREAM PROJECTS RESULTED IN IMPROVING ACCESS TO 9.4 MILES OF SALMON HABITAT. ADDITIONALLY, 31 PREVIOUS RESTORATION PROJECTS, SPANNING 17,600 FEET WERE MAINTAINED.

EDUCATION: DURING 2019, PROGRAM STAFF TRAINED 32 INTERNS WHO IN TURN, VOLUNTEERED 5,398 HOURS OF THEIR TIME TO SUPPORT RESTORATION, EDUCATION AND STEWARDSHIP PROGS. THE STUDENTS FOR SALMON, FOURTH GRADE, SALMON-CENTRIC EDUCATION PROGRAM TAUGHT 1,737 STUDENTS ABOUT SALMON, SALMON HABITAT AND STEWARDSHIP THROUGH 81 DAY LONG FIELD TRIPS. PARTICIPATING TEACHERS OF THE STUDENTS FOR SALMON PROGRAM RECEIVE A FULL CURRICULUM THAT NSEA DESIGNED TO MEET THE NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS AND CLASSES RECEIVE TWO CLASSROOM PRESENTATIONS AND ONE FULL DAY FIELD TRIP AT NO COST TO THE SCHOOL. STUDENTS FOR SALMON PARTICIPANTS PLANTED 300 TREES ALONG LOCAL CREEKS AND REMOVED OVER 5,000 POUNDS OF INVASIVE VEGETATION FROM LOCAL STREAM BANKS TO IMPROVE STREAM HABITAT. IN 2019, NSEA'S RIVER STEWARDS EDUCATION PROGRAM TAUGHT 3,628 PEOPLE ABOUT SALMON IN THE NOOKSACK RIVER THROUGH AN INFORMATION BOOTH ON WEKENDS IN THE SUMMER AND 36 PUBLIC PRESENTATIONS.

STEWARDSHIP: NSEA IS A COMMUNITY BASED ORGANIZATION, AND STRIVES TO ENGAGE COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN THE PROCESS OF SALMON RECOVERY. VOLUNTEERS SUPPORT MANY DIFFERENT PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, AND HELP A SMALL CORE STAFF ACCOMPLISH FAR MORE THAN WOULD OTHERWISE BE POSSIBLE. FOUR AMERICORPS MEMBERS AND A WASHINGTON CONSERVATION CORPS CREW OF SIX IMPLEMENTED PROJECTS, LED PROGRAMS AND WORKED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO SUPPORT HABITAT RESTORATION AND STEWARDSHIP ACTIVITIES. NSEA'S STREAM STEWARDS PROGRAM ENGAGED 1,571 COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS WHO DONATED 4,701 HOURS AT MORE THAN 20 COMMUNITY WORK PARTIES. VOLUNTEERS PREPARED SITES, REMOVED INVASIVE VEGETATION AND PLANTED 5,938 NATIVE TREES ALONG LOCAL CREEKS TO HELP IMPROVE SALMON HABITAT. THROUGHOUT EDUCATION AND STEWARDSHIP PROGRAMMING, 1,962 VOLUNTEERS DONATED A TOTAL OF 11,474 HOURS OF VOLUNTEER TIME TO NSEA IN 2019. MANY OF THOSE HOURS CAN BE USED AS IN-KIND MATCH TO MEET GRANT FUNDING REQUIREMENTS. THE DOLLAR VALUE OF THE VOLUNTEER HOURS DONATED IN 2019 IS WORTH 291,784. (INDEPENDENT SECTOR RATE OF 25,43/HOUR)
