WMBC Mission: To preserve and enhance non-motorized trail access in Whatcom County through stewardship, education, and advocacy.The Whatcom Mountain Bike Coalition (WMBC) is a federal non-profit, 501(c)3, organization. We work with many diverse groups such as land managers, elected officials and educational institutions to promote continued and expanded access for mountain biking and cycling on public and private land. We are stewards of the land we recreate on and coordinate efforts to build or maintain trails. We also promote biking and trail building through our education programs and events.

TRAIL STEWARDSHIP/ADVOCACY: We designed and managed the construction of the 40,000 square foot Waterfront Bike Park with the Port of Bellingham. We worked with Whatcom County Parks to construct the Rufus Creek and Cougar Ridge trail on Lookout Mountain. On Galbraith Mountain, we rebuilt 22 miles of trail after logging took place on the mountain. The Civic dirt jumps had a fresh rebuild during the Spring and Fall and we performed maintenance on Larrabee State Park as well.
EDUCATION: Youth Trail Corps- YTC: This cornerstone of our youth programs gives any interested teen youth the opportunity to explore how to build and maintain trails. We are going into our 5th year with this pre-teen/teen program. This crew worked hard all year on Galbraith Mountain focusing on a variety of issues, strategies and solutions to help our trails run even better. We served 30 teens in 2019 and offered 7 Youth Trail Corps days to any interested youth.Rodeos: WMBC provides funding and support for RRAD to host a Bike Rodeo in all 14 Elementary Schools in the Bellingham Public School District, as well as many schools out in the county. The Bike Rodeos offer kids a host of bike skill challenges to test themselves against. Bike Rodeos reach out to 5,000 youth in Whatcom County every year. Service Learning-YTC: WMBC funds 2 Service Learning Projects for Middle School kids in Whatcom County. This program is a 6 week ongoing trail building project.Take a Kid Mountain Bike Day: a fun filled day for kids from all over Whatcom County. Youth participate in games, bike skills and rides based at Lake Padden.WMBC Elementary After School Rides: 20+ Bellingham elementary, middle and high school clubs including Flying Squirrels girls riding group, are now providing after school ride clubs through WMBC. This program reaches over 300 kids every year.Vamos Outdoors-YTC: WMBC (partnering with Vamos Outdoors) is running a program for a group of ELL (English Language Learners) youth ranging from grades 4-12. We are engaging youth in our community that normally dont access trails and the outdoors. Mountain biking provides youth with appreciation of outdoors, physical and mental challenges and exciting engagement with their surrounding environment. 2019 served 30 Latinx youth. Through grants, we have obtained a fleet of 20 bikes for these youth to ride.
EVENTS: We promote mountain biking and trail building as well as showcase our local trails and hard work by hosting events such as local races and a film and photography contest, Shoot the Trails.
