Enriching the lives of those affected by Type 1 Diabetes through programs programs that inspire, empower, educate, and promote community
Summer camping program - Camp Leo held a total of four summer camp sessions in 2018, hosting early 300 campers with type 1 diabetes attended, in grades 3 through 12. Camp Leo is the only overnight camp in Western Washington that is dedicated to exclusively providing this experience for children with diabetes. We are also the only overnight diabetes camping program in Western Washington that incorporates diabetes education activities into our programming at camp. Children have the opportunity to cultivate the characteristics that position them for success and healthy lives. They learn responsibility through making decisions and working with counselors and health care providers on individual learning and diabetes management goals. They experience the value of cooperation in activities that require teamwork they gain courage, confidence, and acceptance as they acquire new skills and meet others.
Leaders In Training - Camp Leo hosted a leaders in training program in 2018 which supported over 40 teens with type 1 diabetes. This three-day intense program is comprised of educational workshops, leadership and bonding activities, and targeted self-reflection. The creative problem-solving, listening, and communication skills taught by the program can be used year-round by the participants to improve their interpersonal skills, academic performance, and community leadership. The goal of the program is to guide teens with diabetes in learning the value of service and developing the skills, knowledge, and understanding necessary to be strong leaders both at camp and at home. Participants in this retreat also have the opportunity to apply to be a Counselor-In-Training at one of our summer camp sessions.
Family Camp - Camp Leo held its 3rd annual Family Camp in April 2018, hosting approximately 30 families and nearly 100 campers total. The 2018 camp session was a one-day event which provided support to families with children with type one diabetes, in grades 8 and younger, by giving them access to program services, educational opportunities, and community resources. An emphasis of the session is on families of children with a recent diagnosis.
