VISITORS:IN 2019, PACIFIC BONSAI MUSEUM WELCOMED A RECORD NUMBER OF VISITORS-39,790 PEOPLE FROM LOCAL, REGIONAL AND NATIONAL COMMUNITIES AS WELL AS EVERY CONTINENT IN THE WORLD. WE CELEBRATED THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE COLLECTION, FOUNDED IN 1989 BY THE WEYERHAEUSER COMPANY AND CONTINUING AS A NONPROFIT SINCE DECEMBER 2013. COLLECTIONS:THE MUSEUM ACCEPTED TWO BONSAI DONATIONS-A COLORADO BLUE SPRUCE, POT AND STAND AND A JAPANESE BLACK PINE-INTO ITS COLLECTION. EXHIBITIONS:WE MOUNTED A SPECIAL EXHIBITION, PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN, THE SECOND OF A TWO PART EXHIBIT, ACCOMPANIED BY 'NOW IT'S YOUR TURN' SIGNS PROMPTING VISITORS TO APPLY THE DESIGN PRINCIPLES TO BONSAI WORKS OF ART IN OUR COLLECTION. 'STONE IMAGES', A VIEWING STONE EXHIBIT, PRODUCED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE PUGET SOUND BONSAI ASSOCIATION WAS OFFERED TO MUSEUM VISITORS. AN OFFSITE EXHIBIT HELD AT THE SEATTLE TOTOKAELO STORE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH GRAY MAGAZINE PRESENTED THREE MUSEUM BONSAI PAIRED WITH GLASS, FIBER, AND WOOD ARTS AND CRAFTS BY PACIFIC NORTHWEST ARTISTS INCLUDING GLASS ARTIST JOHN HOGAN. A FIVE-WEEK EXHIBIT OF FOUR TROPICAL BONSAI FROM OUR COLLECTION WAS THE FIRST DISPLAY BY A COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION AT AMAZON'S SEATTLE SPHERES. EDUCATION:IN ITS THIRD YEAR, OUR DOCENT PROGRAM CONTINUES TO GROW AS OUR VOLUNTEER DOCENTS SHARE THE BONSAI'S STORIES WITH THE PUBLIC AND HELP VISITORS HAVE A MORE PERSONAL, EMOTIONAL, AND THOUGHT-PROVOKING EXPERIENCE. OUR POPULAR TOURS WERE OFFERED EVERY SUNDAY FOR FREE AND BY APPOINTMENT ON A DONATION BASIS. STUDENTS FROM PRE-K THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL CONNECTED WITH NATURE AND LEARNED ABOUT THE ART OF BONSAI THROUGH OUR FIELD TRIP PROGRAM. DURING VISITS TO THE MUSEUM, STUDENTS DEVELOPED THEIR UNDERSTANDING AND EXPERIENCE OF ART CONCEPTS AND SKILLS THROUGH OBSERVATION AND HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES.COMMUNITY:OUR SPRINGTIME BONSAI FEST! EVENT PRODUCED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE PUGET SOUND BONSAI ASSOCIATION WELCOMED MORE THAN 3,750 VISITORS OVER THE TWO-DAY WORLD BONSAI DAY-MOTHER'S DAY WEEKEND. WE PARTICIPATED IN THE RHODODENDRON SPECIES BOTANICAL GARDEN'S, BLUE POPPY DAY AND FALL FESTIVAL, WITH OUR POPULAR, A BONSAI SOLSTICE EVENT CLOSED OUT THE YEAR IN DECEMBER.INNOVATION:PACIFIC BONSAI MUSEUM'S COMMITMENT TO INNOVATION IN BONSAI ART IS DEMONSTRATED BY OUR LAB (LIVING ART OF BONSAI) PROJECT A FOUR-PART, MULTI YEAR-LONG EXPERIMENT INVESTIGATING THE INFLUENCE OF INSPIRED ARCHITECTURAL SETTINGS, AND THE EFFECT OF COLLABORATION RESEQUENCING ON THE ART OF BONSAI.THE OVERALL GOALS OF THE PROJECT ARE TO ADVANCE INNOVATION IN BONSAI AND TO STIMULATE A CRITICAL DIALOGUE AROUND THE ART OF BONSAI. IN 2019, WE PRODUCED TWO SESSIONS OF THE LAB: THE SITE OF BONSAI AT THE WOLLOCHET HOUSE DESIGNED BY MARY LUND DAVIS AND EXPLORATION & INQUIRY AT THE FAUNTLEROY AND JUNSEI HOUSES DESIGNED BY GEORGE SUYAMA WITH BONSAI ARTIST RYAN NEIL, CERAMIST RON LANG, AND FINE FURNITURE MAKER AUSTIN HEITZMAN.
