STEWARDSHIP CREW - WE CONTINUED TO GROW OUR STEWARDSHIP FIELD CREW PROGRAM THAT WORKS WITH AREA LAND MANAGERS AND HOME OWNERS TO IMPLEMENT PROJECTS TO IMPROVE FOREST HEALTH, REDUCE WILDFIRE DANGER TO LOCAL COMMUNITIES AND ENHANCE HABITAT. A FIVE PERSON CREW IS EMPLOYED AND IN 2018-19 PROJECTS INCLUDED SEVEN DEFENSIBLE SPACE/WILDFIRE RISK REDUCTION PROJECTS, SEVEN PRESCRIBED BURNS, TWO NON-COMMERCIAL THINNINGS, ONE TREE PLANTING PROJECT, ONE NOXIOUS WEED SURVEY, AND TWO HABITAT IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS.
COOPERATIVE LAND MANAGEMENT AGREEMENT ON CONBOY LAKE NWR - THE ADMINISTRATION OF ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION AND STEWARDSHIP PROJECTS ACROSS THE MT. ADAMS LANDSCAPE IS A MAJOR FUNCTION, DOMINATED BY WORK WITH THE US FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE BY COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT TO MANAGE FORESTLANDS ON NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE. ACCOMPLISHMENTS DURING THE 2018-19 YEAR INCLUDED CONTINUED IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE'S FOREST STEWARDSHIP PLAN AND INCLUDED TREATMENTS ACROSS APPROXIMATELY 57 ACRES, INCLUDING CONTRACTING A FORESTRY SERVICES CONTRACTOR TO REMOVE SEVERAL DOZEN TRUCKLOADS OF TREES/LOGS TO IMPROVE FOREST STAND CONDITIONS FOR WILDLIFE HABITAT, RESILIENCY AND FIRE CONTROL. NET REVENUES FROM THIS UNDERTAKING ARE HELD IN AN ACCOUNT WHERE THE US FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE DIRECTS OUR ORGANIZATION TO MAKE INVESTMENTS IN ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION PROJECTS FOR WHICH OTHER FUNDING IS NOT IN HAND. PROJECT REVENUE AND EXPENSES ALSO REFLECTS DETAILED MONITORING OF THE IMPACT OF FOREST TREATMENTS ON WATER CAPTURE AND STORAGE ACROSS THE REFUGE. THESE EFFORTS ARE ALSO EXTENDED TO SMALL FOREST LAND OWNERS AND LAND CONSERVANCIES TO PROVIDE THEM SUPPORT TO MANAGE THEIR FORESTS FOR MULTIPLE VALUES, INCLUDING BROADER SOCIETAL BENEFITS SUCH AS IMPROVED WILDLIFE HABITAT AND ECOSYSTEM SERVICES. THIS INVOLVED CONSULTATIONS ON LESS THAN 200 ADDITIONAL ACRES DURING THE 2018-19 FISCAL YEAR.
MT. ADAMS COMMUNITY FOREST - THE MT. ADAMS COMMUNITY FOREST PROJECT IS FOCUSED ON CONSERVING WORKING FORESTS IN THE REGION BY ACQUIRING PRIORITY LANDS INTO LOCALLY-BASED, NON-PROFIT OWNERSHIP. 2018-19 WAS DEVOTED TO CONTINUING MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES OF PROPERTIES PURCHASED IN 2011 AND 2014. WE WORKED WITH UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON RESEARCHERS TO SUPPORT A STUDY OF THE ECONOMIC CONTRIBUTIONS OF COMMUNITY FORESTS ON LOCAL ECONOMIES, USING THE MT. ADAMS COMMUNITY FOREST AS AN EXAMPLE. AND WE CONDUCTED VARIOUS ASPECTS OF NEGOTIATION, DUE DILIGENCE AND OTHER ACQUISITION SUPPORT TASKS NECESSARY TO COMPLETE THE PURCHASE, VIA A LOAN, OF AN ADDITIONAL 154 ACRE COMMUNITY FOREST PROPERTY. LASTLY, SMALL QUANTITIES OF PRODUCTS FROM THE FOREST THAT WERE GENERATED FROM STEWARDSHIP ACTIVITIES WERE SOLD.
