Organizations Filed Purposes:
To share the joy of live jazz performance by fostering a superb, professional jazz orchestra, educating the next generation to perform and treasure jazz, and enriching the repertoire with new works, newly restored classics, and professional recordings.
SJO is the producing organization for the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra, a 17 piece ensemble of the most prominent jazz musicians in the Seattle area. We also work to educate the next generation to appreciate and perform this uniquely American art form.
Subscription Concert Series: SRJO's 2019-2020 season was planned for five shows at both the Nordstrom Recital Hall (528 seats) of Benaroya Hall in Seattle and the Kirkland Performance Center (399 seats). We expanded to two shows at the Edmonds Center for the Arts (704 seats) and a Benaroya matinee in our continuing effort to grow our audience. Before the COVID-19 pandemic closed all venues, we completed the following shows: 1)Count Basie Meets Ellington, Oct 5 & 6, 2019, Feb 16, 2020 2)Jazz of the Harlem Renaissance, Nov 2, 3, & 22, 2019 3)Tribute to Billie Holiday, Jan 26, Feb 1 (two shows), 2020. Our April and June concerts with nationally known guest artists had to be postponed due to the pandemic, but we were able to quickly produce a live-streamed concert in June from Seattle's Town Hall.
Education: SRJO is committed to passing the passion for jazz on to a new generation and has two main educational programs. Jazz4Kids free concerts are geared towards children and youth with one performance this year before the pandemic closed down venues. The Jazz Scholars program provides free in-school and online music instruction for 450 underserved students in 9 SE and SW Seattle middle and high schools. A dedicated team of coaches work in tandem with Seattle Public School band and orchestra teachers to help strengthen existing instrumental music programs. Coaches develop music curriculum goals and provide one-on-one, small group, and full classroom instruction in jazz and traditional styles. When the pandemic hit, we swiftly pivoted to online and video instruction, hardly missing a beat.
Outside concerts and CDs: SRJO is in demand for a number of contracted performances. This season we performed the 32nd annual Duke Ellington Sacred concert with the Northwest Chamber Chorus in Seattle. Other notable gigs included performances for the Seattle YMCA and Horizon House Retirement Community. SRJO has 4 recordings available for sale: SRJO Live, Sacred Music of Duke Ellington, Kansas City Suite, and a work commissioned by SRJO, Jimmy Heath: The Endless Search.
