Organizations Filed Purposes:
THE ORGANIZATION'S PRIMARY EXEMPT PURPOSES ARE TO PROVIDE AND MAINTAIN A COMMUNITY ARTS FACILITY; TO PROMOTE, DEVELOP AND PRESENT DIVERSE PROGRAMS OF ENTERTAINMENT; TO PROMOTE EDUCATION IN THE ARTS AND CULTURAL ENRICHMENT TO THE WHIDBEY ISLAND COMMUNITY AND ITS VISITORS. WHIDBEY ISLAND CENTER FOR THE ARTS HAS RECENTLY BEEN DESIGNATED THE LOCAL ADMINISTRATOR FOR THE WASHINGTON STATE ARTS COMMISSIONS'S "CREATIVE DISTRICT PROGRAM" DESIGNED TO GROW OUR COMMUNITY'S CREATIVE ECONOMY.
THE 2019-2020 SEASON WAS INSPIRED BY GREAT STORY AND THE WOMEN PIONEERS WHO DEFIED, REDEFINED, AND SHATTERED OUR "TRADITIONAL" ROLES. THIS SEASON SAW THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 19TH AMENDMENT TO THE U.S. CONSTITUTION, GIVING WOMEN THE RIGHT TO VOTE. THUS GIVING US REASON TO SHOWCASE WOMEN'S VOICES SUCH AS: ART AND MUSIC TALKS FEATURING ALL FEMALE LEADERS LIKE SEATTLE ART HISTORIAN REBECCA ALBIANI AND WHIDBEY ORCHESTRA CONDUCTOR CYNITHIA MORROW-HATTAL.OUR WILDLY SUCCESSFUL STATE OF AMERICAN POLITICS LECTURE SERIES BROUGHT AUTHOR LYNNE OLSEN AND CNN'S JOAN BISKUPI TO OUR STAGE. AND DJANGOFEST NW, THE LARGEST GYPSY JAZZ FESTIVAL IN NORTH AMERICA, FEATURED MORE FEMALE MUSICIANS THAN EVER BEFORE IN OUR 20 YEAR HISTORY OF THE FESTIVAL!OUR AWARD-WINNING LOCAL THEATRE SERIES OPENED WITH A NEW ADAPTATION OF MAE WEST'S BROADWAY HIT SEX, THE PLAY THAT SENT HER TO JAIL AND INITIATED HER INTO THE SISTERHOOD OF EARLY FEMINISTS. WE ADDED MUSIC FROM COLE PORTER AND GEORGE GERSHWIN. DECEMBER WAS A NEW ADAPTATION OF THE HOLIDAY CLASSIC, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, THEN IN FEBRUARY 2020 WE PRODUCED OUR 100TH PLAY, RED BY JOHN LOGAN, ARGUABLY ONE OF OUR MOST PROFESSIONAL AND PROFOUND PRODUCTIONS.THEN IN MARCH 2020 THE WORLD CHANGED AND COVID-19 FORCED SHUTDOWNS. WE PRODUCED A WILDLY SUCCESSFUL AND SOLD OUT SUMMER MUSIC SERIES ON THE OUTSIDE PATIO AND PIVOTED TO SHOWING MOVIES UNTIL THIS NEWEST SHUTDOWN.VOLUNTEERS STAFF THE MAJORITY OF THEATRE CASTS AND SUPPORT PERSONNEL FOR ALL PRODUCTIONS TOTALING 10,320 VOLUNTEER HOURS. PAYMENTS TO PROFESSIONAL DIRECTORS, ARTISTS, MUSICIAN, AND DESIGNERS HIRED EQUATE TO JUST UNDER 10% OF EXPENSES. TOTAL OVERALL PATRON ATTENDANCE FOR THE PAST FISCAL YEAR WAS ON TRACK TO BREAK RECORDS BEFORE COVID SHUT THE BUILDING, STILL ACHIEVING GREAT ATTENDANCE NUMBERS OF 10,000.
