TO ENSURE THE FUTURE OF SALMON IN THE STILLAGUAMISH, SNOHOMISH AND ISLAND COUNTY WATERSHEDS.
HABITAT PROGRAM: IN 2019, SOUND SALMON SOLUTIONS (SSS) WORKED ON 30 HABITAT RESTORATION AND ENHANCEMENT PROJECTS THROUGHOUT THE SNOHOMISH AND STILLAGUAMISH WATERSHEDS INCLUDING INVASIVE VEGETATION CONTROL, RIPARIAN PLANTING, VEGETATION MONITORING, AND IN-STREAM RESTORATION, AND STREAM SURVEYING TO IMPROVE WATER QUALITY AND SALMON HABITAT. WITH THE HELP OF STAFF, VOLUNTEERS, AND STUDENTS, SOUND SALMON SOLUTIONS CONTROLLED 187 ACRES OF INVASIVE VEGETATION, PLANTED OVER 8,100 NATIVE PLANTS ACROSS 26.25 ACRES, AND SURVEYED 6 STREAM MILES.
EDUCATION AND HATCHERY PROGRAMS:IN 2019, SSS' EDUCATION PROGRAM ENGAGED 3802 STUDENTS AND 716 ADULTS IN PROGRAMMING RELATED TO SALMON RECOVERY. STUDENT VOLUNTEERS PLANTED OVER 768 NATIVE TREES AND SHRUBS IN SITES THROUGHOUT THE STILLAGUAMISH AND SNOHOMISH WATERSHEDS. SSS STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS ENGAGED 1,3111 COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN INFORMATION ABOUT SALMON, NATIVE PLANTS, AND WATER QUALITY AT OUTREACH EVENTS THROUGHOUT OUR SERVICE AREA.THE WILLOW CREEK SALMON & WATERSHED EDUCATION CENTER STARTED A TRANSFORMATION IN 2019. SOUND SALMON SOLUTIONS RECEIVED A TWO-YEAR GRANT FOR $25,979 FROM WDFW'S AQUATIC LANDS ENHANCEMENT ACT TO UPDATE THE FACILITY TO ENSURE SAFETY AND A WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT FOR THE VOLUNTEERS TO WORK IN. THIS FUNDING WAS USED TO REPLACE THE SALMON REARING POND FENCE, THE PREDATOR NET, AND PURCHASE TWO AQUARIUM SETS FOR THE SALMON IN SCHOOLS PROGRAM. THE REST OF THE FUNDING WILL BE SPENT IN 2020 AND 2021. THE WILLOW CREEK SALMON & WATERSHED EDUCATION CENTER ALSO RELEASED 76,000 COHO SALMON INTO THE LAKE WASHINGTON WATERSHED.
STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM:IN 2019 SOUND SALMON SOLUTIONS HOSTED 10 VOLUNTEER EVENTS, INCLUDING 544 VOLUNTEERS FOR A TOTAL OF: 3918.75 HOURS ON 5 SITES. WE HOSTED 3 EAGLE PROJECTS, INCLUDING TRAIL RESTORATION AND BRIDGE REPAIR AT THE WILLOW CREEK SALMON & WATERSHED EDUCATION CENTER (WCSWEC), INSTALLATION OF AN OUTDOOR WHITEBOARD FOR EDUCATION PROGRAMS AT THE WCSWEC AND A NATIVE TREE PLANTING AT AL BORLIN PARK IN MONROE, WA NEAR WOODS CREEK AND THE SKYKOMISH RIVER. IN ADDITION, WE HOSTED 3 SERVICE-LEARNING INTERNS, TWO FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON, BOTHELL AND 1 MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT FROM BRIGHT WATER WALDORF SCHOOL. FUNDRAISING: WE RAISED $14,020 THROUGH MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGNS, ONE-MEMBERSHIP SUMMER BBQ AND TWO ONLINE GIVING CAMPAIGNS, INCLUDING GIVEBIG IN MAY, 2019 AND OUR END OF YEAR FUNDRAISING, INCLUDING GIVING TUESDAY IN DECEMBER, 2019.
