Fostering sustanable shellfish resources and a healthy marine environment through research and education
Sk Off Bottom: This research evaluates the effects of off-bottom oyster culture on the local environment and neighboring shellfish operations. Collected data will inform predictive models to evaluate farm effects at different spatial scales and under a variety of scenarios. Findings from this study will be used to site structures to maximum sustainable production and to help develop best management practices (BMPs) in collaboration with regional shellfish farmers.
NMAI Rock Scallop: This project assesses rock scallop uptake, tissue concentration and detoxification rates of phycotoxins. Experiments determine potential impacts on the developing aquaculture effort for this species. Results will assist public health agencies and will enable public health labs in Washington and Alaska to evaluate the most appropriate biotoxin detection methods for this species.
PCSGA-OA: This project works to understand the extent and impact of ocean acidification on bivalve shellfish. PSI researchers are currently helping to inform shellfish growers and researchers of pertinent water quality variables near shellfish setting, remote setting and hatchery sites.
