2020 was a difficult year for many centers given that they were not able to run courses (or only limited courses) during the pandemic. In order to be of support, VCF provided general COVID-relief grants to four centers in Latin America, out of our Latin America Fund. VCF also formally launched a new U.S. & Canada COVID Fund in September 2020; and began raising money for this fund to support centers hardest hit in North America during the pandemic. VCF started distributing grants from this fund in April of 2021.In 2020 VCF continued its support of center expansion in Latin America and North America with various grants to centers. VCF also launched a large grant initiative to Myanmar; and also provided granting to other countries in Asia (Sri Lanka, Australia and India).Grant to International Dhammagiri Vipassana Association to support 25 Vipassana Centers in Myanmar: There are currently 25 established centers in Myanmar: 20 active centers and 5 under construction. A grant of $490,000 was awarded to the Association in February 2020 to provide general operating support to each of the Myanmar Centers, with the intention of helping support each of the centers in their continued evolution and growth to help spread access to the teachings of Vipassana Meditation as taught by S.N. Goenka. Grant to A.C. Vipassana Dhamma Cordoba in Argentina for legal fees to establish the Center: In October 2016, a group of meditators purchased a 108 hectares property near the town of Capilla del Monte, Cordoba, Argentina from which 22 hectares which included the Farmhouse and outbuildings, were donated to establish the Dhamma Viriya Center (the second official center in Argentina). In October 2020, a $20,000 grant was awarded to Dhamma Viriya to support the foundational legal work required to formally transfer over land ownership (title transfer) from the original seller to Dhamma Viriya and other meditators originally involved in the 108-hectare purchase of land.Grant to Dhamma Dharani Vipassana Meditation Center in Sri Lanka to complete the pagoda: In October 2020, a grant of $160,500 was awarded to the Dharani Vipassana Meditation Center in Sri Lanka to support the completion of Dhamma Dharani's pagoda construction. This timely grant enabled Dhamma Dharani to sufficiently complete the construction of its pagoda, in time to support the long course for old students that it was conducting in December of 2020.Grant to IVTA to implement MediaWalla in centers in Latin America: A grant of $8,000 was awarded to the International Vipassana Technology Association (IVTA) to support the equipment purchase and implementation of MediaWalla technology in centers in Latin America. MediaWalla is a digital audio and video streaming system designed to play Vipassana course media files from a centralized server to various devices. The first system was installed at Dhamma Makaranda, Mexico in the first quarter of 2021. The next systems will probably be installed at each of the two Colombia Centers sometime in the summer of 2021.Grant to Asociacion Vipassana Peru to build two additional dormitories: In 2018, Vipassana Per began construction of the Dhamma Suriya Center. VCF provided a $90,000 grant at that time to support with Stage 1 construction. Those funds, matched by a slightly larger amount from local funds, built a very large kitchen-dining complex. Next, two dormitories with 12 individual rooms each were completed. In October 2020, a grant of $36,000 was awarded to build 2 additional dormitories, with 12 students each housed in rooms of three (i.e. 24 additional students). This will allow Vipassana Peru to increase the number of students from 24 to 48 students and allow the center to hold its first residential courses.Grant to Asociacion Vipassana de Mexico, A.C. for construction and maintenance projects: In August 2020, a grant of $9,965 was awarded to the Dhamma Makaranda Center in Mexico to work on construction, maintenance and preventative maintenance projects while the Center was closed due to COVID.
Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) continue to be an active option for larger donors who wish to provide more directed and/or anonymous giving in the United States. In 2020 there were four such active funds that made some donations to general operating support for centers in the U.S. as well as supported VCF's COVID Fund and Admin Fund.
