Organizations Filed Purposes: ORGANIC SEED ALLIANCE (OSA) DELIVERS ON-FARM RESEARCH, FARMER EDUCATION, AND POLICY ADVOCACY THAT MEET FARMERS' SEED NEEDS. THOSE NEEDS HAVE INCREASED AS AGROCHEMICAL CONGLOMERATES HAVE MONOPOLIZED TWO-THIRDS OF THE WORLD'S SEED SUPPLY, REDUCING FARMERS' CHOICES AND PUSHING SEED THAT IS GENETICALLY MODIFIED, GROWN WITH PESTICIDES, AND RESTRICTED BY PATENTS. OSA BUILDS REGIONAL SEED SYSTEMS THAT ARE RESILIENT TO CHANGING CLIMATES AND STRENGHTEN FOOD SOVEREIGNTY AND SECURITY.

ADVANCING ETHICAL SEED SOLUTIONS TO MEET FOOD AND FARMING NEEDS IN A CHANGING WORLD.

RESEARCH AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS TO MEET ORGANIC PRIORITIES-OSA'S FARM-BASED RESEARCH AND EDUCATION PROJECTS TESTED AND IMPROVED CROP VARIETIES THAT THRIVE IN ORGANIC SYSTEMS, TRAINED FARMERS TO GROW SEED AND BREED NEW VARIETIES, AND EXPANDED TECHNICAL SEED RESOURCES FOR FARMERS. PROJECTS DELIVERED IN 2019 THROUGH A VARIETY OF USDA PROGRAMS (FUNDED DIRECTLY BY USDA AGENCIES OR INDIRECTLY BY STATE AGENCIES) AND FOUNDATION-SUPPORTED SERVICE PROJECTS INCLUDED VEGETABLE AND GRAIN RESEARCH BASED IN WASHINGTON, CALIFORNIA AND SEVEN OTHER STATES AND INAUGURAL REGIONAL SEED SUMMITS IN THE UPPER MIDWEST AND SOUTHEAST. OSA EVALUATED OVER 200 NAMED VARIETIES AND OVER 600 BREEDING LINES OF A DOZEN CROPS, INCLUDING CABBAGE, CARROT, SWEET CORN, TOMATO, PURPLE SPROUTING BROCCOLI AND QUINOA. WE ENGAGED 34 FARMERS AS ON-FARM RESEARCH PARTNERS, PARTNERED WITH 12 UNIVERSITIES AND 14 SEED COMPANIES ON RESEARCH TRIALS AND VARIETY IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS, AND PARTICIPATED IN EIGHT FARM FIELD DAYS AND FIVE CULINARY TASTING EVENTS. EDUCATION PORGRAMS AND EVENTS SERVED OVER 6000 PARTICIPANTS IN 11 STATES.

ADVOCACY TO ENSURE ORGANIC INTEGRITY AND STRENGTHEN PUBLIC SUPPORT OF ORGANIC SEED -OSA WORKS CLOSELY WITH THE NATIONAL ORGANIC STANDARDS BOARD (NOSB) AND BROADER ORGANIC COMMUNITY TO KEEP THE TOPIC OF SEED AT THE FOREFRONT OF ORGANIC POLICY DISCUSSIONS. THIS YEAR OSA WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN THE NOSB PASSING PROPOSALS THAT ENSURE A FUTURE WHERE MORE ORGANIC FOOD IS GROWN FROM ORGANIC SEED. AHEAD OF THE FALL NOSB MEETING, WE SURVEYED ORGANIC FIELD CORN COMPANIES REPRESENTING SEED PLANTED TO OVER 70% OF ORGANIC CORN ACREAGE IN THE U.S. THE SURVEY WAS ESSENTIAL TO INFORMING OUR POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS ON THE TOPIC OF SEED INTEGRITY. WE SURVEYED THESE COMPANIES ON THEIR TESTING PRACTICES, COSTS, AND EXPERIENCES WITH GMO CONTAMINATION TO BETTER UNDERSTAND HOW ORGANIC POLICY CAN IMPROVE THE GENETIC INTEGRITY OF SEED USED BY ORGANIC FARMERS.

STUDENT ORGANIC SEED SYMPOSIUM-THE 2019 STUDENT ORGANIC SEED SYMPOSIUM, FISCALLY SPONSORED BY OSA, PROVIDED EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMING ORGANIZED BY AND FOR ORGANIC GRADUATE STUDENTS, WHO OFTEN ARE THE LONE ORGANIC RESEARCHERS AT THEIR UNIVERSITIES, AND THEIR MENTORS IN THE SEED INDUSTRY. STUDENTS PRESENT ON THEIR OWN RESEARCH, LEARN FROM EXPERTS, BUILD COMMUNITY, AND TOUR RESEARCH FIELDS AND FACILITIES, SEED FARMS, AND SUSTANIABLE FOOD INDUSTRIES.
