THE PORT TOWNSEND MARINE SCIENCE CENTER INSPIRES CONSERVATION OF THE SALISH SEA.
THE MARINE SCIENCE CENTER'S THREE MAIN PROGRAM SERVICE AREAS ARE: ENGAGING VISITORS THROUGH THE MUSEUM AND AQUARIUM; LIFELONG LEARNING THROUGH EDUCATION PROGRAMMING; AND EMPOWERING CHANGE, THROUGH CITIZEN SCIENCE INITIATIVES. IN 2019 THE MARINE SCIENCE CENTER SERVED 20,436 VISTORS IN THE MUSEUM AND AQUARIUM, A 14% INCREASE OVER 2018 THAT CONTINUED A PATTERN OF STEADY ANNUAL GROWTH SINCE 2014. THIS IS IN PART DUE TO INNOVATIVE PROGRAMMING THAT INCLUDES PROGRAMS LIKE ORCA FEST, A COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP IN SUPPORT OF THE ENDANGERED SOUTHERN RESIDENT KILLER WHALE POPULATION; AND THE OCTOPUS LEARNING PROJECT IN ASSOCIATION WITH SEALIFE PRODUCTIONS. PARTICIPATION IN THE LIFELONG EDUCATION PROGRAMS ALSO INCREASED 3% OVER THE PREVIOUS YEAR. EDUCATION PROGRAMS WORK WITH SCHOOLS, SUMMER DAY CAMPS, WILDLIFE TOURS, AND ADULT PROGRAMS INCLUDING A LECTURE SERIES. CITIZEN SCIENCE INCLUDES TEN LONG-TERM PROJECTS THAT RANGE FROM THE MICROWORLD OF SOUNDTOXINS, AN EARLY WARNING TEST FOR SHELLFISH POISONING; TO THE MARINE MAMMAL STRANDING NETWORK, COVERING OVER 200 MILES OF SHORE LINE. AN EXPANDING PARTNERSHIP WITH THE PUGET SOUND RESTORATION FUND IS DEDICATED TO RIVIVING THE PINTO ABALONE SPECIES (ENDANGERED IN 2018). THE MARINE SCIENCE CENTER SERVED AS THE PILOT REMOTE NURSERY LAB, RAISING JUVENILE PINTO ABALONE FOR REINTRODUCTION INTO THE LOCAL WATERS BY THE THE PUGET SOUND RESTORATION FUND. USING THE MODEL DEVELOPED WITH THE MARINE SCIENCE CENTER, PUGET SOUND RESTORATION FUND PLANS TO SCALE UP THEIR OPERATION BY WORKING WITH SMALL MARINE SCIENCE CENTERS AROUND PUGET SOUND TO HELP RAISE AND DEPLOY JUVENILE ABALONE. THE MARINE SCIENCE CENTER'S ROLE IS EXPANDING TO DEVELOP MESSAGING AND EXHIBITRY THAT CAN BE REPLICATED AND SHARED AMOUNG ALL THE REMOTE NURSERY SITES. THIS PARTNERSHIP ILLUSTRATES THE RICH, SYNERGISTIC CYCLE THAT IS THE KEY OBJECTIVE IN THE 2018 UPDATED STRATEGIC PLAN: TO INTEGRATE PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT THE THREE CORE COMPETENCIES--VISTOR EXPERIENCE, LIFELONG EDUCATION AND CITIZEN SCIENCE. THIS PROGRAMMATIC INTEGRATION AND GROWTH, IN CONJUNCTION WITH A WA STATE PARKS MARINE FACILITIES PLAN WHICH KICKED OFF IN JANUARY 2019, IS LAYING THE GROUNDWORK FOR MAJOR FACILITY RENOVATIONS.
