Emergency Response and General Program: NWHRN leads the healthcare community in preparing for, responding to and recovering from disasters, emergencies, and incidents. Throughout 2020 NWHRN was activated for emergency response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Washington State. NWHRN maintains a 24/7 duty officer and operates a healthcare emergency coordination center (HECC) during emergency responses. The HECC coordinates the efforts of healthcare providers with public health and emergency management agencies, and local, state and national government partners. Through the HECC, NWHRN collects and analyzes information gathered from healthcare organizations to provide up-to-date information used in disaster response. The HECC also coordinates disaster response activities such as medical surge across healthcare and coordinates mutual aid for resources needed by healthcare providers during an emergency, such as personal protective equipment or other medical supplies. These activities help preserve life through the better coordination of healthcare services. When not activated for disaster response, NWHRN facilitates the development of health care strategies, policies, procedures and plans necessary for response and recovery.
Planning & Committees: NWHRN facilitates community and regional planning to establish relationships, leverage expertise, and develop tools and plans. Partners in this work include hospitals and health systems, public health and emergency response agencies, tribal governments and other providers such as long-term care facilities, dialysis providers, blood distributors and more. In addition, NWHRN convenes healthcare leaders to expand regional response capabilities with more effective sharing of information and resources. A variety of critical advisory committees and workgroups, such as the disaster clinical advisory committee, significantly improve regional response.
Training & Exercises: NWHRN develops innovative, year-round training and exercise opportunities tailored to the unique needs of Washington State's healthcare community. Our partners, including the leading medical institutions in our region, contribute the latest knowledge to help ensure each training is relevant. NWHRN's scenario-based exercises provide healthcare partners and community the opportunity to practice, test and improve their disaster-response plans.
