Support the conservation of marine species and populations by developing, improving and using technologies to conduct scientific research into their biology, behavior and physiology to improve public knowledge of marine species and human affects on them.
PROGRAM: LMR-BEAK-1 - SCORE M3R MFA SONAR BEHAVIORAL RESPONSES OF BEAKED AND FIN WHALESDiscern the behavioral responses of beaked whales and fin whales to Navy Mid Frequency Active (MFA) sonar. Individual responses to real Navy sound sources, as recorded by tags previously deployed by Marine Ecology and Telemetry Research, will inform Navy take estimates, a key aspect of NOAA/NMFS regulatory requirements. This contract is in support of the M3R program.
PROGRAM: CESU-BEAK - COOPERATE WITH M3R AND NUWC TO ELUCIDATE SIZE, STRUCTURE AND TRENDS IN MARINE MAMMAL POPULATIONS, FOCUSING ON BEAK AND FIN WHALES, AROUND SOAR. The ultimate goal is to use resulting data to assess effects of military activities on these populations.
