Amplios Talking Book programs and partnerships continued to flourish and evolve in 2019. Below are some highlights about our programs and impact. Niger Smart Villages / United Nations partnership In 2019, the United Nations invited Amplio to participate in the government-led Niger Smart Village project. Led by the National Agency for the Information Society (ANSI), in partnership with ITU, the project aims to digitally connect 15,000 rural villages. Government ministries will use the Amplio Talking Book to share knowledge on a broad range of subjects spanning agriculture, health, and education. The Smart Villages pilot phase has launched in two villages. Niger is the first francophone country to use Talking Books! World Bank Community-Driven Development Intentional Futures, an ideas-to-impact consultancy, presented the Amplio Talking Book to the World Banks Community-Driven Development (CDD) team as a digital development solution. CDD chose the Talking Book as a tool to promote social inclusion. With the World Banks support, we have pending projects with the governments of Uganda and Cameroon. Using Talking Books to improve health and nutrition in Kenya Our affiliate, Centre for Behaviour Change and Communication, used Talking Books to train and support 826 community health volunteers for USAIDs Afya Timiza project in Kenya. CHVs used Talking Book to provide access to quality health information for pastoral nomadic families. Messages reached 227,624 adults, youth, and children in Samburu and Turkana counties. The project made the news: Two TV stations in Kenya reported on how wildlife rangers are helping to bridge the gap in essential health services by educating semi-nomadic pastoral communities on the importance of antenatal care, family planning, and hospital deliveries. These medical rangers use Talking Books! CBCC also partnered with RTI International to use Talking Books for a USAID-funded project to improve nutrition for smallholder dairy and horticulture farmers. The project aims to reach 40,000 farmers and their families. Promoting child health and development in Ghana From 2013-2019, UNICEF Ghana used Talking Books to reach media-dark, rural remote communities in the Upper West Region. Implemented by our affiliate Literacy Bridge Ghana (LBG), with support from Amplio, the program promoted key family practices for child health and development. UNICEFs Talking Book content included messages on health, nutrition, education, child protection, and water, sanitation, and hygiene, and more. Participants listened to Talking Books in their Village Savings and Loan Association meetings, individually, with their households, and during community dialogues. Stakeholders came together to discuss new ideas and find solutions to challenges such as dealing with water sources shared with animals and children leaving to work in the city. UNICEFs Talking Book program reached over 40,000 households, before coming to a close in December 2019. In a close-out survey, program participants cited the Talking Book as a top source of information for all topics covered. In a related project in 2019, Amplio, LBG, and UNICEF partnered with Ghana Health Services to Talking Books at eight rural health posts. Community Health Nurses used Talking Books to educate and engage families during antenatal care visits and child welfare clinics. Nurses reported they were able to deliver health services more efficiently and effectively. Capacity building for the Amplio team In 2019, we added three new stars to our team a communications assistant, a business development coordinator, and a product development manager. With more bandwidth, were investing in a new learning portal for our partners, easier to use tools, and more outreach to develop partnerships around the world. Amplio also grew stronger as we took time to revamp our shared values, organize our knowledge base, set and review quarterly goals, and keep each other productive, engaged, and energized every day. Our 2020 vision and COVID-19 response Amplio has exciting new partners and projects in the works! Unfortunately, many things are on hold due to quarantine. But we can give you a preview: - Were preparing to launch a learning portal and new tools to help local organizations more easily run Talking Book programs on their own. - Our affiliate network is expanding to Ethiopia! We cant wait to welcome and introduce Whiz Kids Workshop, a wonderful social enterprise that specializes in award-wining childrens media. - In 2020, we expect to celebrate a milestone: Talking Book programs will have impacted over one million people by the end of the year. Amplio is currently focused on COVID-19 response. In partnership with Literacy Bridge Ghana, Ghana Health Services, and UNICEF, we are working to share lifesaving information in under-resourced, media-dark communities. Community health nurses and volunteers are using Talking Books to share COVID-19 health messages throughout eight districts near the border of Burkina Faso. To date, the project has launched in 207 community health zones, with plans to expand. Amplio has redirected its budget to support the effort. But we know our work doesnt stop there. The World Bank, Oxfam, and leading organization predict the pandemic will push half a billion people into poverty. The poorest and most vulnerable communities in regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa will be hardest hit. There is a great deal at risk, including food security, nutrition, education, health, and gender equity. With this understanding, Amplio remains committed to our mission to empower the worlds most vulnerable communities through knowledge sharing.
