Organizations Filed Purposes: Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition/Technical Advisory Group elevates the voice of those impacted by the Duwamish River pollution and other environmental injustices to advocate for a clean, healthy, and equitable environment for people and wildlife. We promote place-keeping and prioritize community capacity and resilience. We envision an empowered Duwamish Valley Community thriving in a healthy and just environment.

Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition/Technical Advisory Group works to elevate the voice of the community regarding the cleanup of the Duwamish Superfund site, human and wildlife health, and other issues of importance to the community.

Education and Stewardship: DRCC/TAG works with the community to prioritize concerns and work towards rectifying social and environmental justice issues which stem from living within a Superfund site (affordable housing, clean air strategies, etc.). DRCC builds resilience, community capacity and leadership by lifting up voices which are usually left out of discussions through 3 programs. The Community Stewards Program engages community members and facilitates trainings in stewardship techniques, providing job training and economic investments. In the Healthy Home Initiative/Air Program, DRCC/TAG works with local contractors to offer evaluations of factors leading to poor indoor air quality. Training residents allows us to expand employment opportunities and to provide residents with knowledgeable representatives. Finally, DRCC/TAG supports the Duwamish Valley Affordable Housing Coalition and staffs a member of the Coalition to organize and mobilize vulnerable community members to prevent displacement. We also support Fisher Groups, a critical stakeholder group in the river cleanup.

Youth program: Five years ago, DRCC created the Duwamish Valley Youth Corps. Most of our youth are persons of color, members of low-income households, and are immigrants and/or non-native English speakers. There are few job opportunities (besides which, many of our youth are undocumented), few entertainment venues, and a dearth of funding/programming at our Community Center. The Youth Corps is an engagement program focusing on environmental justice and job skills. The Youth Corps provides a critical pathway towards goals of education and employment for the youth participants through lessons about environmental justice and community issues and hands-on projects (tree planting, neighborhood cleanups, restoration and maintenance work, invasive weed identification, rain garden construction, air quality projects, and green wall construction). Youth mentors who have completed a cohort return to assist the newbies or first-time participants and are able to deepen their knowledge. To date, the program has made an impact on more than 1000 local youth from the area.

Superfund Liaison and Communication: Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition/Technical Advisory Group was founded in 2001 in response to the Environmental Protection Agencys designation of the Duwamish Waterway as a Superfund site. DRCC/TAG serves as liaison between the EPA, Responsible Parties and other industry, and community members. We ensure that communication between affected parties/impacted communities is transparent and accessible. We serve as the Communitys representative on the EPAs Roundtable which is working on the next phase of River cleanup. DRCC/TAG is helping organize the EPA Roundtable and actively supporting participation by community members so that the cleanup planning for the Superfund site is highly inclusive of community needs and desires. We offer a strong educational component via boat tours, river festivals and non- traditional engagement strategies (living room forums, promotores model, local school education) to teach about superfund and environmental justice issues.
