THE MUSEUM OF POP CULTURE'S MISSION IS TO MAKE CREATIVE EXPRESSION A LIFE-CHANGING FORCE BY OFFERING EXPERIENCES THAT INSPIRE AND CONNECT OUR COMMUNITIES.
TO MAKE CREATIVE EXPRESSION A LIFE-CHANGING FORCE THROUGH EXPERIENCES THAT INSPIRE AND CONNECT.
EXPENDITURES RELATED TO THE DEVELOPMENT AND PRODUCTION OF EXHIBITIONS ADVANCE THE MUSEUM'S MISSION OF MAKING CREATIVE EXPRESSION A LIFE-CHANGING FORCE BY OFFERING EXPERIENCES THAT INSPIRE AND CONNECT OUR COMMUNITIES. AS OF 2019, MOPOP HAS ORGANIZED 102 EXHIBITIONS, 24 OF WHICH HAVE TRAVELED TO MUSEUMS, ARTISTIC CENTERS AND LEARNING INSTITUTIONS BOTH INTERNATIONALLY AND ACROSS THE U.S.. ONSITE THESE EXHIBITIONS ARE SEEN BY OVER 750,000 VISITORS A YEAR, AND BEYOND MOPOP ITSELF, OUR EXHBITIONS HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCED BY OVER 8 MILLION PEOPLE ACROSS 10 COUNTRIES. THROUGHOUT ALL WE DO, MOPOP SPARKS CURIOUSITY AND ENCOURAGES SKILL-DEVELOPMENT AT THE INTERSECTION OF PERFORMING, MEDIA ARTS, AND STEM/DIGITAL LITERACY.
MOPOP OPERATES AN ICONIC, ARCHITECTURALLY SIGNIFICANT AND CUSTOM-BUILT MUSEUM BUILDING, DESIGNED BY RENOWNED ARCHITECT FRANK O. GEHRY. PROGRAM COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE BUILDING INCLUDE DEPRECIATION OF $6,822,749 AND $6,683,956 AND OCCUPANCY OF $2,164,815 AND $2,165,301 RESPECTIVELY FOR 2019 AND 2018. WHEREAS SOME MUSEUMS HAVE A SEPARATE LEGAL ENTITY WHICH OWNS THEIR BUILDING AND IS NOT CONSOLIDATED WITH OPERATIONS FOR FORM 990 REPORTING PURPOSES, MOPOP DOES NOT. THEREFORE, MOPOP'S FORM 990 INCLUDES ALL DEPRECIATION EXPENSE OF ITS BUILDING. EXCLUDING THAT DEPRECIATION, MOPOP PRODUCED AN EXCESS OF REVENUES OVER EXPENSES OF $4,137,903 AND $6,565,074 FOR 2019 AND 2018 FORM 990 REPORTING PURPOSES. MOPOP FUNDS THE COST OF BUILDING CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS OUT OF CASH FLOW FROM MUSEUM OPERATIONS.
EXPENDITURES RELATED TO MOPOP'S EDUCATIONAL IN-MUSEUM AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS PROVIDE A VARIETY OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS, TEACHERS, AND FAMILIES, INCLUDING TOURS AND WORKSHOPS, SCHOOL-BASED OUTREACH PROGRAMS, AND TEACHER TRAINING. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AT MOPOP PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH TO EXPLORE THEIR CREATIVE PASSIONS AS MUSICIANS, WRITERS, FILMMAKERS AND ARTISTS, WHICH INCLUDE PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES TO SHOWCASE THEIR WORK. SUCH PROGRAMS INCLUDE SOUNDOFF! (AN ANNUAL YOUTH MUSIC DEVELOPMENT AND MENTORSHIP PROGRAM FOR UNDERAGE MUSICIANS), THE RESIDENCY (A FOUR-WEEK SUMMER DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCE FOR UNDERSERVED YOUTH THROUGH HIP HOP), AND WRITE OUT OF THIS WORLD, A WRITING PROGRAM FOR 3-12TH GRADE STUDENTS. IN 2019, MOPOP SERVED OVER 165,000 YOUTH AND STUDENTS THROUGH IN-MUSEUM EDUCATION PROGRAMS, DISCOUNTED ADMISSIONS, AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS. OTHER PARTICIPATORY LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDE THE ANNUAL POP CONFERENCE - AN ANNUAL CONVENING OF MUSIC JOURNALISTS, ACADEMICS, AND PERFORMING ARTISTS, LIVE AT MOPOP - A PERFORMANCE PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS, AND OUR ANNUAL SCIENCE FICTION + FANTASY SHORT FILM FESTIVAL, WHICH INTRODUCES ATTENDEES TO EMERGING FILMMAKERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD.
