In 2019, the organization concluded Hot Spot, its pilot program providing 5 years of free summer waterfront public programming led by Friends working with over 40 partners and welcoming over 55,000 event attendees. This pilot project successfully demonstrated the operating model and associated public benefits for the future waterfront park as a place for cultural and recreational programming managed by a non-profit in partnership with the City. During 2019, Friends also negotiated its first management agreement authorized by City ordinance between Friends and Seattle Parks & Recreation (SPR) to formally operate Pier 62 together, with Friends carrying out community programming & enhanced staffing and SPR responsible for general maintenance. The rebuilt Pier 62, the first piece of the future park, will open in 2020. Friends continued to operate Waterfront Space, its public showroom for the project offering educational events and tours highlighting the environmental, social and economic benefits of the project.
