IN SUPPORT OF ITS MISSION TO ADVANCE CONTEMPORARY ART, ARTISTS AND IDEAS, THE HENRY DEVELOPS AND PRESENTS EXHIBITIONS OF CONTEMPORARY ART, MAINTAINS A 26,000+ OBJECT PERMANENT COLLECTION, AND OFFERS EDUCATION PROGRAMS TO SERVE A BROAD PUBLIC AUDIENCE, INCLUDING AN ONLINE CONSTITUENCY. FREE ADMISSION IS EXTENDED TO THE FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON AND TO STUDENTS AT ALL LEVELS OF ELEMENTARY AND HIGHER EDUCATION WORLDWIDE.
TO ENGAGE ALL PEOPLE IN THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF CONTEMPORARY ART AND IDEAS.
DURING FISCAL YEAR 2020, THE HENRY PRESENTED IN PLAIN SIGHT, A 14-ARTIST GROUP EXHIBITION THAT FILLED THE ENTIRE MUSEUM AS WELL AS INTERSTITIAL SPACES, HIGHLIGHTING NARRATIVES, COMMUNITIES, AND HISTORIES THAT ARE OFTEN INVISIBLE OR HIDDEN IN OUR PUBLIC SPACE. ACCOMPANYING THIS EXHIBITION, OFFERED A RICH SUITE OF PUBLIC PROGRAMS CONNECTING AUDIENCES OF ALL AGES TO NEW WAYS OF EXPERIENCING THE WORLD THROUGH ART. THIS EXHIBITION MET OUR GOALS TO GENERATE NEW SCHOLARSHIP, CONNECT THE PUBLIC WITH ARTISTS WORKING AT THE GLOBAL LEVEL, AND ADD TO THE CREATIVE CAPITAL OF OUR REGION. WE FURTHERED OUR COMMITMENT TO EMERGING TALENT THROUGH ORGANIZING AND PRESENTING THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON MASTERS OF FINE ARTS AND MASTERS OF DESIGN EXHIBITION. IN RESPONSE TO THE PANDEMIC, WE OFFERED THIS EXHIBITION IN AN INNOVATIVE ONLINE FORMAT. THE CORE OF OUR WORK AND OUR EFFORTS TO BENEFIT OUR COMMUNITY CONSISTS IN PROVIDING ACCESS TO OUR MUSEUM EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS. WE CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC MARCH 9. FOR THE DURATION OF OUR PHYSICAL CLOSURE, WE HAVE PURSUED HEIGHTENED ENGAGEMENT WITH OUR COMMUNITIES, THROUGH #HENRYATHOME, OUR EXPANDED SUITE OF REMOTE OFFERINGS AND COMMUNICATIONS EFFORTS TO REACH THE PEOPLE OF OUR REGION LIVE WITH ART. WE EXPANDED A SCREENING SERIES IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NORTHWEST FILM FORUM, SHOWING FILMS RELATED TO OUR EXHIBITION, IN PLAIN SIGHT, AND TRANSFORMED THIS INTO A CONTINUING ONLINE PROGRAM. OUR ARTVENTURES, FREE ARTMAKING WORKSHOPS FOR INTERGENERATIONAL GROUPS, MIGRATED ONLINE IN MARCH, MEETING THE ACUTE NEED FOR SHARED AND ENRICHING ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES SHELTERING IN PLACE. WE ALSO BEGAN PRESENTING OUR MONTHLY COLLECTIONS PROGRAM ONLINE. WE CONTINUE TO ENGAGE AND PAY TEACHING ARTISTS, PERFORMERS, AND OTHER PROFESSIONALS, CONDUCTING AND SHARING THESE TALKS, SCREENINGS, TOURS, AND WORKSHOPS.
THE HENRY HAS A GROWING COLLECTION OF IMPORTANT WORKS FROM THE 15TH CENTURY TO THE PRESENT, INCLUDING THE RENOWNED JOSEPH AND ELAINE MONSEN COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHY, AND NEW ACQUISITIONS REFLECTING THE DYNAMIC RANGE OF CONTEMPORARY ART BEING CREATED WORLDWIDE. SUB-COLLECTIONS OF NOTE ARE: THE STIMSON-BULLITT COLLECTION OF 19TH CENTURY PRINTS; JAPANESE FOLK POTTERY AND NORTHWEST CERAMICS; THE THOMAS AND FRANCES BLAKEMORE COLLECTION OF JAPANESE PRINTS; THE BURT AND JANE BERMAN COLLECTION OF CONTEMPORARY ART; THE WILLIAM AND RUTH TRUE COLLECTION OF CONTEMPORARY ART; THE ALBERT FELDMANN COLLECTION OF EUROPEAN MASTER PRINTS, AND THE WASHINGTON ART CONSORTIUM COLLECTION OF AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHS, 1970-1980. WITH THE FINALIZED ACQUISITION AND INVENTORY OF THE FELDMANN COLLECTION, THE HENRY IS NOW ABLE TO PRESENT A NEARLY COMPREHENSIVE SURVEY OF PRINTMAKING, GROUNDED IN ITS SOCIAL AND POLITICAL HISTORY.
