Organizations Filed Purposes: PACIFIC NORTHWEST RESEARCH INSTITUTE (PNRI), A NONPROFIT CORPORATION, IS AN INDEPENDENT, BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE CONDUCTING BASIC AND APPLIED RESEARCH AIMED AT UNDERSTANDING HOW HEALTH IS MAINTAINED IN THE FACE OF GENETIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH DISEASE DEVELOPMENT. THE SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERIES HAVE APPLICABILITY IN A VARIETY OF DISEASES, INCLUDING DIABETES, CANCER, NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS, AMONG MANY OTHERS.

AN INDEPENDENT, BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE AIMED AT UNDERSTANDING HOW HEALTH IS MAINTAINED IN THE FACE OF GENETIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH DISEASE DEVELOPMENT.

PNRI'S CLINICAL RESOURCES AND CAPABILITIES ARE AT THE CENTER OF THE PURSUIT TO TRANSLATE SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERIES INTO HEALTH IMPACT. EXAMPLES OF OUR CLINICAL DIABETES RESEARCH INCLUDES: 1) DETERMINING THE EFFICACY OF ANTIOXIDANTS IN PROTECTING BETA CELL FUNCTION IN PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES; 2) IMPROVING METHODS FOR DETERMINING THE GENETIC RISK FOR TYPE 1 DIABETES IN NEWBORNS; 3) IDENTIFYING BIOMARKERS ASSOCIATED WITH EARLY ONSET OF TYPE 1 DIABETES; 4) IDENTIFYING POTENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL TRIGGERS ASSOCIATED WITH AN INCREASED RISK OF DEVELOPING TYPE 1 DIABETES; AND 5) EVALUATING THE EFFICACY OF VARIOUS LOW-TOXICITY, IMMUNE THERAPIES IN RECENTLY DIAGNOSED TYPE 1 PATIENTS.

PNRI CONTINUES TO EXPAND AND STRENGTHEN THE BIOINFORMATICS AND GENOMICS RESEARCH PLATFORM TO ENABLE THE INVESTIGATION OF THE FUNDAMENTAL CAUSES OF A VARIETY OF DISEASES, INCLUDING DIABETES. PNRI BELIEVES THAT BETTER UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF THE INTERACTION BETWEEN THE ENVIRONMENT AND GENETICS, AS WELL AS EPIGENETICS AND TRANSGENERATIONAL HEREDITY, WILL GENERATE INSIGHTS INTO THE PREVENTION OF HUMAN DISEASES. IN FY18, WE COMMITTED SIGNIFICANT RESOURCES TO NEW EQUIPMENT, INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS, FOUNDATIONAL RESEARCH, AND RECRUITMENT OF NEW SCIENTISTS. EXAMPLES OF OUR RESEARCH USING THIS PLATFORM INCLUDE: 1) APPLYING COMPUTATIONAL ANALYSIS TO IDENTIFY GENE-GENE INTERACTIONS CONTRIBUTING TO DISEASE PHENOTYPES; 2) EXPLORING THE EMERGING FIELD OF EXTRACELLULAR RNA (EXRNA) AND ITS POTENTIAL ROLE AS A COMMUNICATION MODALITY BETWEEN CELLS IN THE HUMAN BODY; 3) DETERMINING THE CONTRIBUTION OF TRANSGENERATIONAL HEREDITY IN GOVERNING BODY WEIGHT AND RISK OF METABOLIC DISEASE; AND 4) APPLYING COMPUTATIONAL AND EXPERIMENTAL METHODS IN YEAST MODEL SYSTEMS TO IDENTIFY METABOLITES ASSOCIATED WITH A VARIETY OF HUMAN DISEASES.

THE APPROACHES AND METHODS DEVELOPED AS PART OF PNRI'S GENOMICS AND BIOINFORMATICS PLATFORM HAVE APPLICABILITY TO THE STUDY OF MANY DISEASES. EXAMPLES OF RESEARCH IN OTHER DISEASES INCLUDE THE IDENTIFICATION OF GENES THAT CONFER SUSCEPTIBILITY TO TESTICULAR CANCER, AND THE STUDY OF STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF GLYCOSPHINGOLIPIDS IN CELL COMMUNICATION AS IT RELATES TO CANCER.
