TO SECURE, PRESERVE, AND STEWARD THREATENED FARMLAND IN WASHINGTON.

FARMLAND PRESERVATION PROGRAM: THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE TRUST IS TO SECURE, PRESERVE, AND STEWARD THREATENED FARMLAND IN WASHINGTON, TO ENSURE THAT GENERATIONS OF LOCAL FARMERS PRODUCTIVELY FARM IT USING SUSTAINABLE, ORGANIC GROWING METHODS. THE TRUST TAKES ITS MISSION ONE STEP FURTHER THAN MOST LAND TRUSTS BY WORKING TO PLACE FARMERS ON THE PROPERTY, ACTIVELY PRODUCING FOOD FOR THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. A PRIMARY METHOD FOR THE TRUST TO PROTECT IRREPLACEABLE AGRICULTURAL LAND AND PRESERVE LOCAL FARMING COMMUNITIES IS BY PURCHASE OF AGRICULTURAL CONSERVATION EASEMENTS. THESE REMOVE DEVELOPMENT RIGHTS AND GUARANTEE THE LAND WILL BE SUSTAINABLY FARMED IN PERPETUITY. ANOTHER PRIMARY METHOD FOR THE TRUST IS TO ACQUIRE THREATENED FARMLAND AND LEASE IT TO A FARMER.

FARMLAND STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM: THE GOAL OF THE FARMLAND STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM IS TO DEVELOP COLLABORATIVE AND SCIENTIFICALLY-RELEVANT STEWARDSHIP PLANS FOR EACH OF THE TRUST'S PROPERTIES, INCLUDING OUTLINES FOR ORGANIC CERTIFICATION, SALMON SAFE CERTIFICATION AND IMPLEMENTATION OF BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES. ANNUAL MONITORING WILL ENSURE THE LAND IS USED AS PRESCRIBED IN THE CONSERVATION EASEMENT AND THAT IT IS BEING ACTIVELY FARMED. THE INNOVATIVE FARMER OUTREACH COMPONENT OF THE STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM IS UNLIKE TRADITIONAL LAND TRUST STEWARDSHIP PROGRAMS IN THAT FARMERS ARE SELECTED AND VETTED FROM THE OUTSET TO HELP FOR A SMOOTHER TRANSITION WHEN THE LAND EVENTUALLY CHANGES OWNERS. FARMERS WHO ARE FULLY COMMITTED TO AGRICULTURE, AND INTERESTED IN RAISING THE NEXT GENERATION OF FARMERS, ARE MORE LIKELY TO CREATE INTERNSHIP AND TRANSITION PROGRAMS TO ENSURE THE VIABILITY OF THE FARM INTO THE FUTURE.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM: A KEY ELEMENT IN FULFILLING THE MISSION OF THE TRUST IS EDUCATING THE PUBLIC IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: 1) THE IMPORTANCE OF SUPPORTING LOCAL, SUSTAINABLE AND ORGANIC FARMERS; 2) THE NECESSITY TO PRESERVE THE DECREASING SUPPLY OF PRODUCTIVE REGIONAL FARMLAND; AND 3) THE WILDLIFE AND ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS OF RESPONSIBLE AGRICULTURAL LAND STEWARDSHIP. THE TRUST ACHIEVES THESE GOALS THROUGH ANNUAL FARM TOURS, PUBLIC PRESENTATIONS, AND OUTREACH AT EDUCATIONAL FAIRS AND EVENTS.
