PWA COMMITS TO ASSIST THE VICTIMS OF NATURAL DISASTERS AND MAN-MADE CRISES THROUGH RAPID, COORDINATED RELIEF AND RECOVERY EFFORTS. PWA PREPAREDNESS AND RELIEF AND RECOVERY ACTIVITIES HIGHLIGHT PROVEN STRATEGIES AND CAPABLE PARTNERS.
THE CENTRAL JAPAN FLOODS AND TYPHOON JEBI STRUCK JAPAN IN JULY 2018 RESULTING IN HOMES, ROADS, BUSINESSES BEING DESTROYED. PEACE WINDS AMERICA AND PEACE WINDS JAPAN PARTNERED TOGETHER TO ASSIST FLOOD VICTIMS WITH EVACUATION CENTERS, MEDICAL CLINICS/HYGIENE KITS, AND ALSO CLEAN-UP OF HOMES IF SALVAGEABLE.
THE JAPAN DISASTER RELIEF AND RECOVERY PROGRAM FOLLOWED THE TWO EARTHQUAKES THAT STRUCK KUMAMOTO PREFECTURE IN APRIL 2016. PEACE WINDS AMERICA WORKING WITH PEACE WINDS JAPAN HAS PROVIDED IMMEDIATE RELIEF (FOOD, SANITATION, SHELTER) AND THEN HELPED MOVE THE SURVIVORS INTO TEMPORARY HOUSING, DISTRIBUTING APPLIANCES TO MORE THAN 1,500 FAMILIES. WE HAVE PROVIDED CARE AND SHELTER FOR THOSE FAMILIES WITH PETS, ENABLING THEM TO KEEP THEIR PETS IN ANIMAL SHELTERS. ALSO, WE HAVE PROVIDED MONTHLY EVENTS, TRAINING, AND LIVELIHOODS PROGRAMS FOR THE TEMPORARY HOUSING RESIDENTS "BUILDING COMMUNITY" WITHIN THE 24 TEMPORARY HOUSING TOWNSHIPS.
PEACE WINDS AMERICA IS IMPLEMENTS THE UPGRADING SHELTER PROGRAM FOR SYRIAN REFUGEES IN NORTHERN IRAQ. THE PROGRAM BEGAN IN 2018 WITH THE STATE DEPARTMENT BEGINNING FUNDING IN SEPTEMBER 2018, WITH PEACE WINDS AMERICA AS THE PRIME IMPLEMENTER OF THE PROGRAM AND THE SUBRECIPIENT/SUBAWARDEE IS PEACE WIND JAPAN. SYRIAN REFUGEES AND INTERNALLY DISPLACED IRAQIS ARE LIVING IN SHELTERS THAT PWA IS UPGRADING THROUGH CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS AND THROUGH EMPLOYING REFUGEES (CASH FOR WORK). THE TWO YEAR PROGRAM WILL END IN AUGUST 2020.
