Organizations Filed Purposes: ROOTS Young Adult Shelter builds community and fosters dignity through access to essential services and a safe place to sleep for young adults experiencing homelessness.

Young Adult Shelter: The shelter provides a safe, dry place to sleep, hot meals, and hygiene facilities to homeless young adults ages 18-25 seven nights each week. ROOTS is specifically designed to meet the needs of homeless young adults, and provides an integral piece of the continuum of care for homeless persons in King County. In 2019, ROOTS provided 13,281 bed nights of shelter and served 411 unduplicated guests.

Work or Opportunities Training (WOOT): In 2017, ROOTS instituted this new program and added a full-time case manager and jobs coach to our staff. The WOOT program offers guests case management services and a jobs program. As part of our WOOT program ROOTS also added a daytime drop-in for the first time in July of 2018. This program addition came out of our guest feedback sessions, where we heard frequently that the young people who stay with us often dont have anywhere safe to go during the day. Drop-in occurs from 2-6 PM every Monday, and we have onsite medical services provided by the Country Doctor two days a month. The jobs program portion of WOOT ended in May 2019 when that staff member departed and we opted to focus solely on the case management component of this program.

Public Engagement: In addition to providing critical direct services, ROOTS founding vision includes a dedication to the development of a stable and comprehensive network of youth and young adult services as well as the need for systems change, both in the U-District and throughout the city of Seattle and the broader region and society at large. To this end, ROOTS works to bring together diverse groups and to build the partnerships that are required to address issues of homelessness and poverty in a long-term manner, providing leadership in several region-wide advocacy efforts). In addition, this program also includes the work we do to change systems that oppress people based on their race, gender, sexual orientation, physical disability, and other vulnerabilities. This program also covers the work we do in collaboration with other agencies (government, nonprofit, and for profit) to ensure better and more efficient sharing of information and coordination of services.
